We chose this cruise for the different ports that it would be visiting. All ports were interesting. We were pleasantly surprised with Athens and slightly disappointed with Santorini. However overall good and fortunately excellent weather. This was our first time with NCL and were pleased overall with the great food, good stateroom (so glad we upgraded to a balcony) and enjoyed the entertainment. We didn't go to the theatre, but enjoyed The Musical Trio, three excellent musicians who played in the Atrium. I did think there should have been more variety in the various bars/lounges re the entertainment.

This was the first time we had totally flexible dining and only chose to visit Aqua dining room once for formal dining. We have been in P&O and MSC cruises so this was a nice change. I did slightly miss getting to know a set group of people, but saying that, we did get to know loads of people as everyone was very friendly. The Market Cafe buffet provided great food such as show omelette making for breakfast and create your own stir fry at lunch time...and joy of joys back bacon at breakfast. However the seating reminded us of a works canteen. It was difficult at times to get a seat and the way the tables were laid out, made it awkward to access spare seats.

The staff were great, so friendly and helpful. This includes the cabin steward and the dining staff. Sometimes the drinks staff on board deck were sour faced, but they seemed under real pressure. To get a drink at the outside bar, you had to queue. A warning too about the drinks package. It isn't totally free...you do pay a service charge on each drink even if the actual drink is free. However the range of drinks provided was good. Also it must be noted that we also incurred a tax which was explained initially as one imposed because we were leaving from Barcelona and we would stop as soon as we were outside a 15 kilometre boundary. However this didn't happen...everyone was charged this throughout the cruise. It caused so much concern that many people including ourselves ended up cancelling the daily gratuities. We never go on ship excursions, partly because they are far too expensive, but also because my husband has limited mobility so all day excursions would be too much for him. We would have liked more port information than was provided by NCL. We discovered late on that reception provided port/city maps but you had to ask. These should have been provided with the daily briefing. Overall a great cruise and would certainly consider going with NCL again. Several people we spoke to said that although they weren't keen on Norwegian Star, other ships were much better.

Cabin Review

Balcony

Cabin BD

Cabin was'bijou'....that is, small but beautifully formed. Everything was there, including bathrobes (though they were very small). There was a safe using four number pin of personal choice, a TV with ship channel plus Sky News and Sky Sport and English film channel. There was sockets for Uk plugs as well as European plugs. There was a little settee which was useful and although we never used the contents of the mini bar, it was useful to have the fridge and a bucket of ice was provided twice daily which was great. There was also a coffee maker, again we didn't use. It would have been better just to have a kettle for either tea or coffee. We never used room service. The steward was great, very conscientious. We were pleased we had upgraded to a balcony although it was the type that was slightly enclosed rather than just partitioned from next door.

Port Reviews

Taormina (Messina)

We really liked Messina. As usual we aimed for a Hop on hop off bus, as my husband has limited mobility so this is the easiest way to see an area. This was very interesting. A bonus was that we arrived back in the central square of the town just in time for midday when the clock strikes 12, and provides a really interesting animated display..worth seeing and we wished we had filmed it. A lovely spot where the ship moored

Malta (Valletta)

We have visited Malta before about 15 years ago, and were mildly disappointed by the state of Valetta viewed from a hop on hop off bus. We did a trip to Medina, and then returned straight to Valetta. The view from the ship in the harbour was great

Athens (Piraeus)

We were pleasantly surprised with Athens. There were hop on hop off buses at the port which do tours from the port of Piraeus around Athens, but we took advice from another passenger and took the local express bus X80 into Athens and then went on a road train which included the main sights including Parthenon and Acropolis. All great.

Santorini

I was so looking forward to visiting Santorini as I have some of the famous photos of blue roofed, white walled buildings. The sea was a bit choppy going over in the tender and then took another boat trip to Oia which is where those photos were taken. Arriving at Oia, we left the boat and had to climb a very steep hill to buses to take us to the town. These buses run hourly to take people back to the main town. We only stayed at Oia for 45 mins...my husband has limited mobility so couldn't walk around the town. We got the bus back to the main town, had an over priced coffee and then walked on cobbled streets back to the cable car to take us to the tender. We couldn't have walked the road down and would certainly not have used those poor donkeys to transport people.

Crete (Heraklion)

I was looking forward to visiting Crete, but obviously Heraklion is a busy port town so don't see the best of the island. We again used the hop off hop off bus which was interesting. It was unfortunately quite cold then but the weather did brighten up later. I would like to explore the island more in the future.

Katakolon (Olympia)

We have visited here before and love this peninsula. Such a nice little town. We just had a walk as my husband wasn't feeling well.

Naples

Really enjoyed Naples with so much to see. We did a mini hop off hop off bus which held 15 passengers and were small enough to negotiate the narrow streets of the city. The driver was brilliant providing an alternative commentary. Take care here though as someone tried to pinch my husband's wallet from a zipped pocket in his shorts...they didn't succeed as he felt it happening.
