Sail Date: Oct 2016

This cruise reminded me of what it was like cruising 20 years ago. The ship is relatively small and there is not a lot to do. It is a very different experience from the mega ships. But you get to know the passengers and crew. You read and watch the ocean go by. It is very relaxing. Not so great for kids, in my opinion. The entertainment was surprisingly good and the activities staff is excellent. Service overall was very good. This is not an elegant cruise, but it is a great value cruise and a great beginner cruise. The food was a bit of a disappointment -- bland and uninspired for the most part, both in the dining room and Windjammer buffet. The rooms are tiny. The ship is old but overall in very good shape. I would not hesitate go sail the Empress again on a short trip, particularly at these prices. If you are looking to try cruising, a 4-nighter on Empress is ideal. If you are looking for the cruise of a lifetime, look elsewhere.
