I would normally not choose a short cruise like this, as I have been on at least 10 others, but a seminar was scheduled to be held and I needed continuing education credits anyway. I always judge a cruise not by whatever problems crop up, but by what happens to resolve them. I rate RCCL pretty good in this area, so I give the cruise 3.5 out of 5 (but i'll round up and definitely recommend it for first timers who would like to see if cruising is right for them).

This was one of the hurricane Matthew cruises that sailed late (5pm boarding instead of 11 or 12) so we were given a credit right off the bat. Information from RCCL could have been a bit more forthcoming, but I am much more forgiving as I understand the chance one takes when sailing during hurricane season and the inability to give out information with this storm because of its angle of approach to the US. We had a sea day instead of Coco Cay, which was fine with me and my DW.

I did have to rate the cabin "poor" (7634) rather than average as there was a leak initially in the bathroom, which was caulked, but then started to leak on the carpet, so they eventually had to move us down the hall, even though we were willing to stay. I used their help to do the "heavy lifting", which I expect in that situation, and they did not disappoint. For turning my steward into part Butler, i did tip a small extra amount. My wife was more particular about other people handling her stuff (understandable), so she felt a bit more inconvenienced. When asking for a credit for the inconvenience, they initially offered 20% off a future sailing, which we were not happy with. We told them so, and they called back and gave us a $100 credit for the cruise, on top of the initial credit for late sailing, which satisfied us. They went beyond this by sending a free bottle of wine and giving us the 20% off for a future cruise also (at least - we got a letter saying so - we'll make sure to follow up). Our cabin for the last night of the cruise seemed to have an AC unit that didn't cool very well, so the cabins get a poor rating for me. (i'll have to check to see if this issue was out there prior to our embarkation).

Cabin Review

Superior Ocean View Stateroom with Balcony

Cabin D1

Leak was patched, then came back, eventually forcing us out of the cabin. The new one - 7648 - didn't seem to cool well on the last night of the cruise. They were working on the original cabin when we left (could have been a bad shower pan or something else - but they were having to tear up the floor - hopefully you future guests will not have to deal with that issue.

Port Reviews

Nassau

I've always liked Nassau because we found a place 15+ years ago called "Goldies" on Arawak Key - a $4 ride from the port - luckily still there after Hurricane Matthew. Some conch salad they hack up fresh right in front of you with a little heat from goat peppers, and some "sky juice" - worth the $20 tourist price every time. Worth $30 actually - best in the islands if you don't mind the heat. If you tell Goldie you've been there when he was serving sky juice in coconuts 15+ years ago, he may send you a shot of tequila on the house!
