EMBARKEmbarkation in Seattle was a mess. With the new Pier we can easily see what is going on (that I was used to) on the HAL side of the terminal with boarding group numbers and organization vs. PCL's approach which is to not organize anything, eventually put stanchions up that make 5 lanes all dumping into the same guy and everyone rushes to board at once... Pretty bad IMHO, but believe it or not I've experienced worse in Vancouver and those issues were purely the port's fault.PUBLIC ROOMSThe ship looked really nice, and aspects of most public rooms were well decorated, laid out in a way that made sense and clean. My one main complaint in this regard is that the Crown Grill (new from the Fall 2008 dry dock) that replaced Tequilas (a Mexican/Southwestern venue) did so in name and menu only. The Crown Grill looks GORGEOUS on PCL's website and in their coverage of Golden Princess' similar dry dock, yet pictures I've seen of the old restaurant and what it looked like as the Crown Grill from my cruise are exactly the same in every detail. The venue does not fit the menu in the slightest and was disappointing. I'm guessing there were issues with the dry dock and they had to make some sacrifices?CABINThe room was okay, but for those that know HAL, I think more along the lines of a Superior Suite (Category SS/SY/SZ) when I hear mini suite. This was more along the lines of a slightly larger balcony room than usual. The 2 TVs was cool but a bit weird, the bathroom layout left a little to be desired and being spoiled by Elemis products on HAL and NCL, I did not like the Eucalyptus EVERYTHING provided by the ship. Also, bedding seemed well beyond a "well loved" state and there was no sheet/blanket... Just a dvet cover that had an equally well beyond "well loved" feather bed where all the feathers were shoved into the corners of the various chambers. Also, the beds together as a Queen bed created a ridge in the middle... Normally the concern is the gap between them... here it was the mountain. This would have been a 5 or 5+ if the bedding were even of Motel 6/Comfort Inn quality and they provided better bathroom amenities.ENRICHMENTLots going on all over the ship between the computer workshops (although the carry a fee unlike HAL's), Ceramics at Sea, the Alaska Naturalist, etc. I didn't participate in a lot of this, but it was nice to see the options available.RATESI got in under a promotion that essentially had the rates at a 2 for 1 price, so I can't complain about what I paid for the week.DININGThe food was incredible, and in some cases (hosts, please edit me if it's not allowed) was simply orgasmic. Some meals were among the best food I have ever had anywhere, not just at sea. Some items not to be missed are the Goat Cheese Souffle on Chef's Night, the London Mixed Grill available in the dining room at lunch one day, many of the soups including the chilled options and their version of the Baked Alaska, the "Ice Cream 'Bombe Diplomat' " Quite honestly, I dislike Baked Alaska and the huge emphasis on it during any cruise, even Alaska cruises, but this was phenomenal.ENTERTAINMENTThe shows were equally great. although the entertainer/comedian the first night that looked like Kramer from Seinfeld was an idiot and should be avoided unless you like idiots that drone on about nothing. The cast shows were great, Destination Anywhere was FANTASTIC, Cinematastic has some great Cirque du Soleil-style stunts and Motor City in a different lounge was also great and got some guests involved (dancing, etc) The International Crew Show was great and the Cruise Staff's little intermissions between acts were hysterical.Skywalkers Nightclub on the other hand (the club in the shopping cart handle/spoiler) was sadly "dead" on most nights, although the music was very current and the DJ, short of having cuts/scabs/scars all over his face (NO CLUE what happened to the guy...) was really good. I think had we gone a month or so later when more people were out of college/travelling it might have been more lively. (The club on Westerdam to Alaska last year was PACKED every single night)SERVICEAs a quick preface-On the day of embark we got about a 5 minute lecture from our cabin steward about using the privacy sign anytime/everyime we're in the room, even if just watching tv, etc. It was annoying as I only use it when we're asleep or if someone's in the shower and we were lectured about using it every time... but then everything was fine with the guy... we just always had the sign out... But whatever...Alright, here we go...PCL puts out their cruise surveys on the evening of day 5 to give everyone time to fill it out, a separate form for the itinerary and shore ex ratings and then a card where you can nominate people that went above and beyond for employee of the month. Evening of Day 5 I filled this out (seas were rough with gale force winds and 12-15 foot seas so what else was I going to do? ) and put them under a pile of all the daily Princess Patter (their program) copies I was keeping to where it couldn't be seen. The freestyle remarks on the back of the survey were mostly positive and explained (since I couldn't in 2 lines on the employee of the month form) why Borja at the Purser's Desk deserved to be recognized, and his card referred to my cruise survey. The plan here, was to give both directly to Borja, let him make a copy of whatever he wanted to his supervisors could know about all that and then the survey can go wherever the surveys ultimately go to be recorded.Day 6 comes, we're in Victoria, never left the ship (Victoria is beautiful but I'm there so often I'm truly tired of it...LOL) and after dinner we planned on getting the surveys, going to the front office, closing everything on the account since we did cash, watch a movie and get packed and just hang out in the room... maybe a midnight snack of some sort shortly after the "11:59" departure... Nothing big, nothing requiring money... just a mellow night. We come back to the room to grab the surveys and the area had VERY clearly been shuffled through, the neat stack of everything was ALL over the counter area where the tv's are and the cruise survey was gone. Neither of us had touched anything and the concern then arose of what else might have been gone through. (YES, we triple checked EVERYWHERE in the room, even though I know precisely where I put it to make sure I didn't freak out and then have a "oh whoops *nervous laughter*" moment) Nothing was anywhere. We went to the front desk, spoke to a supervisor, Naveem, who listened to all the details, apologized profusely, mentioned that the cabin steward's supervisor would be made aware of everything and to at our leisure (although it was the last night of the cruise) look through our belongings and see if anything else was missing and to let him know immediately. Also, that he would document all this and let me know if the Accommodations Supervisor (the cabin steward's boss) spoke to the cabin steward and had any idea where the cruise survey went to.We go back to the room, start looking through all of our things and I start to fill out the new survey, and there was a knock on the door... our privacy sign was out. We open it up as we assumed it was Naveem or the cabin steward's boss following up with us, but it was the cabin steward by himself at the door, with his hands behind his back."Did you call to have me come down?""No""Are you sure? The front desk said you needed something""No, we're fine. We didn't call the front desk" (Note, we lied to him about contacting anyone because this was highly inappropriate and uncomfortable, but we did not ask that he come to the room when speaking with Naveem)"Are you sure?""Yes, we didn't call anyone.""You didn't need me for anything...""No, we didn't""You're sure?"and so forth... total time was about 3 minutes of this...We shut the door and lock the deadbolt, my friend starting haveing some combination of a panic attack and asthma attack and needed to use his rescue inhaler twice (in the 11 years since diagnosed with asthma, there had NEVER been a need for it previously... but one has always been on hand just in case) We called the front desk and requested that Naveem come to the room immediately. He said he was also bringing the cabin steward's supervisor and would be up shortly. We explained the encounter, the panic/asthma attack that followed, mentioned how highly inappropriate it was and both of them agreed that this sort of thing would NEVER happen, but also that the front office never contacted the cabin steward so there never could have been any sort of confusion that we needed him... plus we learned that he had been off duty for almost half an hour by the time he came to the room. We mentioned that at this point we felt VERY uncomfortable in the room and they tried to reassure us that if the deadbolt on the door was turned, the room steward, nor the present supervisor can access the room. Very few people have access to the keys and they are high ranking staff on the ship. More promises of documentation and profuse apologies followed. We finish looking through everything and best we can tell, nothing was missing. We then packed everything up and watched the NCL Pearl and Westerdam leave Victoria at midnight, then us. Trying to relax... Decided to quickly get food from the 24 hour buffet and come back to the room with it since on/off hours didn't seem to matter to the guy... had a late night snack and I had a coke from the mini-bar having forgotten that we closed everything out. We had also, shortly before departure from Victoria, received a call from Naveem saying that the survey was in a depository area as any picked up by the room stewards that are left in staterooms at disembark are turned into... although it was 1 day early for that... and this confirmed that he had been through our things. We wake up this morning, get all of our things and wanted to get some breakfast at the buffet and left the room at 8:15. The room steward was in the next room over. We go to the elevators and can see in the corner of our eye that he is standing there staring at s, and the elevator that came had too many to also accommodate us and our luggage. The next one comes, we get in and pick deck 14. He walks up. "You had stuff from the minibar."(To get him to just go away and leave us alone) "We didn't have anything""Yeah you did. There were 4 sprites in there." (There were actually three sprites and a coke... to be technical)" No we didn't" (and the elevator dorrs start to shut)(He then uses his hand to hold the elevator doors open) "Yes you did" and then starts mumbling something else.(I then repeatedly start pushing the door close button and honestly my adreneline was pumping so hard at this point I missed what was said next but did have to threaten that if he didn't leave us alone I was calling security. He started to walk off and said "I'll make sure you..." and made some sort of hand gesture we didn't recognize but was threatening. We got to Deck 14, were no longer hungry and went to Deck 6 to report this to the front office. (Note, all we wanted to do this morning was get breakfast, have the last coffees on our coffee card, and relax from the previous night's)While waiting in line, asthma/panic attack and use of the rescue inhaler happened again... We finally got to the front of the line, spoke to Borja initially, the one we nominated for employee of the month from previous stuff, and asked for a supervisor and got Phil... Naveem's counterpart that was on for this shift. He confirmed without us saying anything, that he already knew what was going on and was shocked to hear about this. Stated it was now in the Accommodation Manager's hands and assured us it would be handled as quickly as possible and that this "was totally wrong and something must be done about it" and provided me with a card for customer relations with his name, promised that the latest would be on the records their corporate office receives and encouraged us to call on Monday at the earliest time convenient for us and apologized that he was unable to do anything for us while still onboard. In fairness, while this issue with our room steward leaves us with a very bitter impression with PCL in this regard, individuals such as Borja from the Purser's Desk and Dmitry in the Portofino Dining Room were FANTASTIC and mentioned as such to their superiors, on comment cards and on the forms to nominate employees of the month. VALUE FOR MONEYThe price was great, but no price, high or low, excuses the actions of the room steward. The score of 3 is neutral, as it is difficult to properly score this category.OVERALLIt's tough... food and entertainment were some of the best we've seen, but the actions of staff (the room steward) and a separate incident that was able to receive a solution in 5 minutes after spending over 4 hours in our room waiting for a call back from the front desk including that of a supervisor which never happened... It's hard to say if we would go with PCL again and I believe we will leave that up to how Customer Relations responds to our concerns and how that issue is handled.
