We chose this cruise, because New Orleans is a short drive from our home in Memphis. There were six of us, and the convenience of being able to drive was important. Triumph is the sister ship to Freedom, which we've sailed on before, so we had a pretty good idea of what to expect. We had Faster to the Fun (FTTF) and the Cheers unlimited drink package, and I'm thrilled we did. Our check-in time was between 11:00 and 11:30. We're typically among the last people to get on the ship, so boarded so early was a new experience. The terminal was full of people and we were able to zip right past the lines and walk by everyone seated in the terminal waiting to be called. FTTF was well worth the money! Once we were on, we stopped at the 3rd floor bar and enjoyed some great vacation cocktails. We walked around and toured the pools and enjoyed some pretty good Chinese food. Our rooms were ready once we headed to them, so we checked it out. The balcony stateroom was not the best configuration. The layout seemed kind of odd but the bathroom seemed a little bigger. The shower doesn't have the typical default setting to prevent scalding, so be careful. There was a medicine cabinet which freed up counter space. The entire first day I was concerned about the temperature, and I finally realized the "thermostat" was on the ceiling. It wasn't truly a thermostat but simply a way to control the flow of air with no ability to make the air warmer or cooler. I was pleasantly surprised to see an updated, flat screen tv but sad there was no fridge.

There was a very foul smell many places on the ship; I don't remember encountering this on Freedom. Alchemy, the night club, the Sky Box, and the casino were always great places to hang out. We took in one production show, "Wonderful World", and it was like a telethon meets a talent show meets Vaudeville, but with no story line or dialogue- not my cup of tea. The live band was really good though, and there were some girls showing their bottoms so I guess it wasn't all bad. The Love and Marriage show was hilarious and I'll make it a point to always catch it. We went to see both comedians- Dean Gaines was not even mildly amusing during the "I'm not Profane" performance. I didn't see his other show. The other comedian, Ronnie Bullard, however, was hilarious. Unfortunately, the Punchliner Comedy Club smelled like sewage.

Food: Guy's Burger was amazing as usual. I didn't realize how great the fries were until Sunday when I became sick and they were the only thing I could stomach. The Main Dining Room was pretty good on a couple of nights. Our wait staff, Luca and his guys, were terrific. The chocolate melting cake and the buttered popcorn thing were great desserts. The ravioli may have been the best entree. I had breakfast at the Blue Iguana Cantina, and the juevos rancheros were tasty. The Red Frog Rum Bar makes an amazing Caribbean Colada and the main bar on deck three makes the Mocha Getaway concoction that I couldn't get enough of. The Cheers package allowed us to try most every drink that interested us, but I didn't like not being able to get rum floaters as I normally would. The Perfect Storm at Alchemy became one of my favorite cocktails.

Balcony

Cabin 8E

Not as nice as previous balcony staterooms. The placement of the couch is odd, as it's too long for the wall it's against. The "thermostat" is on the ceiling and there is no mini fridge. The balcony was great and the bathroom was spacious enough and had a medicine cabinet for extra storage.
