We chose this cruise "The Magic of Spain" mainly for it's itinerary, although the ship Tui Discovery we knew was an excellent mid sized ship having sailed on one of her sister ships "The Grandeur of the Seas" with RCL. This time we lashed out and picked a Grand Suite and was not disappointed. A nice large cabin and balcony with a sunbed, table and chairs. Also, plenty of storage space (cupboards and drawers everywhere) and free access into the Consignage Lounge with free Wifi.
I must say I thought Thomson at last "have got it right" with The Discovery. It's a well presented ship in excellent order, clean, and spacious for a mid-size ship. We have sailed on most of the Thomson ships in the past (apart from The Majesty) and went elsewhere over the last few years to other cruise companies mainly because we felt the Thomson fleet was well past it's sell by date, until now. We loved this ship, we loved the flexible dining and the staff were excellent (as always on Thomson). The entertainment was also good although, and this is a personal opinion, I thought this was not quite as good as I have experience on other Thomson ships. The food and service in the main 47 restaurant was very good as well as in the Italian restaurant above it.
A couple of slight niggles 1) I could not find a bar selling Diet Pepsi on tap, they all were poured from a large plastic bottle like you find on sale in a supermarket and because the bottle had been opened before the Pepsi was nearly flat! 2) Having picked a Grand Suite this time there is an issue with the noise from the deck above which generally starts just after mid-night and can go on for a couple of hours. This I believe is due to the staff cleaning the above deck and moving chairs, tables and sun beds around and making sudden bangs and scrapping noises which did not help with a good night's sleep 3 occasions, Thomson you really need to sort this out!
Loved the cabin and balcony, it's size, it's storage facilities and access to free Wifi. Did not like the noise from the deck above at night!
Recommend the Segway Experience tour around Lisbon. Not the ship's tour option but book your own and save £'s and have a much more fulfilling and fun tour of Lisbon.
Take a local bus ride to Benamadina and have a true seaside experience
Stay in town and take the open top hop-on-off bus ride then go for a paddle in the sea and wander through the lovely gardens near the University.
