Superb service requires the same time and effort as mediocre service. That's why I can't understand why the Grand Princess staff didn't step up to the plate and do an outstanding job. It's a matter of self respect. I cannot understand how management has allowed this wonderful ship staff to fall into such apathy or lethargy.
The person who managed our side of the dining room had decent control of the staff. Our wait staff was great. Other than that, management was lax and the staff seemed leaderless. I would fault the Captain for this as he needs to set the standard of excellence for there to ever be outstanding service. It must have been left to the various department heads to whip their staff into shape. They must find someone enthusiastic to pass that enthusiasm on to the staff.
Leaders who don't lead leave a vacuum. If the captain is not tough the staff sees no consequence if they provide sub par service. In the Wheelhouse Bar it was hard to find a server. I had to walk up to the bar to order drinks and they were working their butts off to produce the drinks. I assume they were under staffed. A waiter would wander by every 15 minutes but by then I had already taken care of the drinks.
The cabins are tight. I miss the small sofa that is included in other cruise lines. I understand it goes in dry dock for 8 weeks in December or January. I hope they replace the carpets and worn upholstery everywhere on the ship.
Foggy. We should have booked afternoon. Walked the town and went to Skagway Brewery for an excellent lunch and excellent beer.
We had high tea. The gardens were beautiful. We must have taken 100 pictures.
