My wife and I are 60-ish and have cruised many times. This is our 39th cruise and this is my 19th review for Cruise Critic. We cruised with our adult daughter this time. It was fun to hang out with her but her presence did not affect our cruise in any way as far as reviewing it for readers is concerned.

We have been on the Breakaway out of NYC 4 times and this ship is its twin, but the shows, décor and itinerary are different. If that alone was the entire criteria to compare the breakaway with the getaway, then I would consider the getaway as the winner for all 3 of those reasons. I’ve seen the Breakaway shows many times now, the décor, by now is boring me and the Breakaway itinerary isn’t very diverse. But this isn’t a fair way to review the cruise. We did, however, pick the Getaway over the Breakaway to see new shows and a new look. We got what we expected as far as that is concerned.

There is very little wrong with this ship, but there are a few things that really bug me, enough that I am probably done with the Breakaway class. The overriding concern that I have with NCL, is that they don’t do enough for those in the upper tiers of their loyalty program. RCCL has this so well refined that its hard to not be disappointed with anyone else. This is not so much a criticism of NCL as it is kudos for RCCL. And RCCL even extends the benefits to Celebrity, their alter-ego.

Port Reviews

Roatan

all sorts of peddlers in a dirty port. we didn't feel safe. I will avoid this place in the future.

Costa Maya

It's a tourist trap, to be sure, but it has really grown up to become a worthwhile stop. We rented a golf cart to visit the other side of town and it was great. I would do that again.
