First time on a small ship, service could be better

Review for Alaska Cruise on Silver Shadow
Mendenhall Glacier
Mendenhall Glacier

Our previous experience with cruising has been with Cunard in both Princess and Queens Grill suites. We wanted to try a small ship to see if it suited us better. We are younger than the average passengers at 47 and 38, we don’t mind that but some folks would be put off as the median age is about 65 going up to 80+. We looked at Regent, Seabourn but ultimately decided on Silversea as we liked the itinerary the best and had heard equally good things about all of them. I have read most of the recent reviews of this ship and they vary wildly. I have come to the conclusion that three types of people write reviews on this forum, those who love or hate the ship and those who have sailed before and noticed that it was not as good as it had been. No matter what ship you go on these days, all lines are cutting costs and trying to extract as much money out of each passenger as possible, it is sad but it is the nature of the industry. There is obviously a lot of choice in the market and people for the most part tend to stick with the brand they like.

Itinerary:

7 Day cruise from Seward Alaska to Vancouver, stopping in Sitka, Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan.

Cabin Review

Veranda Suite

Cabin V1

Our suite was 814 toward the front of the ship and was spacious. For those who are familiar with Cunard it is a similar size to a Princess Suite however the balcony is compact. There is a separate bath and shower, both very good sized and two sinks and a large mirror. Very nice sized walk in closet. The suite was always impeccably clean and our butler and cabin attendant made sure all of our needs were met. They will stock your fridge with whatever beer/wine/champagne/soft drinks of your choosing and they are always replenished without asking. Fresh fruit was not automatically provided but we requested it and it was replenished daily. They also have a choice of pillows, we opted for firm pillows.
