We chose this 12 day cruise from Venice for the ORIGINAL ports of call & price (Venice, Olympia, Athens, Istanbul, Kusadasi/Ephesus, Lesbos, Santorini) . It turned out to be only Greek Isles. Indecision and poorly executed itinerary changes plagued the entire trip. Worse yet - all the excursion booklets were wrong or missing ports for half the trip, and excursion tickets were not re-issued with corrected dates & times - confusing some guests and delaying the excursions.
No offer was made to recompense losses due to these changes, or reschedule our cruise as following guests were offered.
The Holland America logistics team bungled execution & communication. First Istanbul was (appropriately) removed from our itinerary - but not Kusadasi, Turkey - which took another 3 days. Then a domino effect of port changes occurred - all announced by a letter in our cabin after dinner. This means we were at sea, at night - so if you had private or outside arrangements (as we did) you had to use their expensive ship-to-shore mobile service/internet - or fix it the next day when you should have been enjoying your excursion. Even the 2 end ports Santorini & Argostoli were swapped suddenly because the "port would have too many cruise ships". The Customer Service team was over-whelmed. OK - enough about logistical nightmares - on to some other things....
CABIN - AVERAGE 3 STARS - Highlights:
1. Stewards clean it 2x/day which some other cruise lines do not.
2. BALCONY upgraded stateroom - the balcony is deep enough for a chair & foot rest.
Typical size and configuration overall - Bed plus Sofa-bed. Good hair-dryer!! Storage is mainly in the closet, sufficient for 2 people, cramped for 3. Modern flat screen TV - but not interactive (couldn't order excursions, etc.) Bathroom had a small tub - handy for rinsing clothes. Good storage space.
EASY PORT TO WALK/TOUR IN. You do NOT need a guide or car. Enjoyable afternoon.
Highly Recommended: National Archeaological Museum;
Other: Shopping; Palace of Grand Masters; Street of Knights.
Exit the Ship's dock and enter one of the Gates of the Rhodes - the medieval town is surrounded by a castle wall and pedestrian only. It's not too large, get a map from the Excursions Desk.
MUST SEE: The National Archeological Museum is actually one of the original fortifications and has artifacts from the Crusades - both christian and muslims occupied this island alternately. Allow 45 minutes minimum. It has ancient greek artifacts including the renowned small white marble statue of Aphrodite and head of Helios (which was copied by Alexander the Great).
There is a restored muslim town-home within the gardens that is nice, and the gardens themselves are beautiful with shady places, fountains, koi pond, flowers and breezes scented by the lavendar bushes. The medieval architecture & artifacts are a nice break from antiquity - but both are contained in this museum.
PALACE OF THE GRAND MASTERS - Picture worthy castle that was constructed in the 2nd WW period, funded by Mussolini we were told. It is 6 Euros to walk through - do so for the views out the upstairs windows if you want, but there is not a lot else in this museum.
STREET OF KNIGHTS & MARKETPLACE - Of all the ports we visited, shopping on Rhodes was the most pleasant as the market place is nicely shaded with trees and vines and dotted with cafes and fountains. There are a LOT of jewelry stores, we found various "Pandora" type charms at reasonable prices.
