We just returned from the Norwegian Breakaway 7 day cruise to Bermuda. This ship is huge and the biggest ship we have been on. I chose this cruise specifically for the ship as my children (ages 12, 15, 18, 19) wanted to go on a cruise that had lots for them to do. This ship does have a lot of activities available but this is deceiving as each venue is so small that with the number of people on board, it is difficult to get a chance to do the activities. The theater was so small and you had to have reservations to go to the free shows. Getting a reservation for a free activity was impossible as they booked up the first night of the cruise! Other fun things cost extra such as bowling and going to some of the other shows. Norwegian has some "free offers" now such as the ultimate beverage package or 3 meal upgraded dining package, but what they don't tell you is that you are taxed for these "free things" which for the beverage package alone added on hundreds of dollars for our family of 6. Lots of nickel and dining!!!
The buffet on this ship is disgusting! The food was left over pieces from other meals and not very hygienic. There was a long piece of hair in my mac n cheese that I am sure came from another traveler and not the staff but it still was gross! I was pleased to see that they added some sinks out in the open next to the buffet to wash your hands with soap and water before eating. I am not sure why they keep using the waterless hand sanitizers on these ships as they are not all the effective against Norwalk virus which causes the vomiting/diarrhea illness that we all fear on our trip! I would recommend the upgraded dinners at the specialty restaurants which were superb but they should be for the extra cost!!
This was our 13th cruise and 3rd with Norwegian. The ships have gotten larger, the balconies smaller, the service poorer and seems like Norwegian is becoming more like Carnival. The fitness room with the treadmills, bikes and ellipticals was tiny and held maybe 40 people which is ridiculous for a ship this size. Never got to go down the slide as the lines were almost to the ground. Couldn't even get close to the pool as again, way to small for the number of people on board. I think Norwegian has forgotten the delicate balance between public space and number of people on board.
