Our family was interested in a cruise to Alaska that would take us one-way from Vancouver, offering several interesting ports and some glacier cruising. We had previously cruised the Caribbean with Celebrity and had enjoyed the experience, so we chose the Millennium, which offered exactly what we were looking for in terms of itinerary. We stayed overnight in the Vancouver area (in hindsight we should have added an additional day for exploration). Our embarkation process was short, smooth and entirely painless. Previous posters had warned of lines and delays for early check-ins, but despite our 11:30 arrival we breezed through everything. The downside of arriving early was that rooms were not ready (ship is not at fault - it is like any hotel, they need time to clean), but it gave us time to explore the ship and check out the beautiful Vancouver views from the top decks. Once we did get into our room (concierge class) we met our room steward and began a week of perfect comfort thanks to his attention and professionalism. We had a connecting room to other members of our family, and it was always clean and tidy from twice a day cleaning - and as part of our concierge class service we had complimentary robes, fresh fruit and canapes daily, welcome sparkling wine, and other little perks along the way. Our family of 5 (including 2 teenagers and 2 seniors) chose to eat all evening meals in the main dining room, where we received excellent service and great food choices. Our other meals were in the 10th floor buffet area, where my only complaint would be the jockeying for a table at meal times. Turnover is pretty fast, but there were several days when we literally walked in circles looking for a space to sit. Our choices for entertainment were the excellent talks on destinations and nature by the ships' experts (particularly Milos), as well as a few evening comedy shows and our daily favorite, trivia. For the most part we took advantage of our balconies to sit and watch the extraordinary scenery go past (including some breaching orcas!) We were fully immersed in our destinations and loved the attention to detail that the experts provided in terms of history, culture, activities and nature. Working with them we felt totally able to select appropriate things to do, and were very well schooled on all things Alaska. By the way, the excursions were absolutely worth the money; this is not a trip to do on a budget. Take a seaplane, go whale watching, explore a glacier, travel by train into the mountains, hike the forests, rent an ATV and explore the area. Every trip we took showed us yet another unique angle of what makes Alaska so special. This was, without a doubt, my family's best vacation, and we have traveled a lot. The cruise was a floating hotel, full of amenities, excellent food and services, which took us to the most wonderful places. Everything was smooth and easy, including disembarking in Seward. We could not have asked for anything better! We will be back.
