Our family took a 14 night cruise on the Maasdam to Alaska, which included SE Alaska as well as Anchorage, Homer, and Kodiak. I highly recommend this cruise and itinerary.

I had thought that the Maasdam would be showing its age and not up to par with the more recent HAL ships, but this was clearly not the case. In all aspects the ship and crew were extraordinary. The ship was in good shape and in many areas they had done some upgrades and modernization, so it did not feel like a ship that was built in 1993. In many ways this smaller ship was a nice change from the bigger ones. The crew had everything well organized and communication was good.

To be fair, the Maasdam has a couple drawbacks. Several years ago HAL decided to go to open seating, which means most people want to eat at 5:15 and go to the 8:00 show. This resulted in delays at dinner in the dining room and overcrowded seating for the evening show. Sometimes it took over 2 hours to complete dinner, and then we had a hard time getting a seat for the show. We ended up eating most dinners in the Lido and getting to the show about 45 minutes early, or just went to the 10:00 show. It used to be that everyone had assigned seating at around 5:30 or 7:30 and then half the people would go to each show. Of course most people would rather eat early, so they went to the open seating. This is still a problem that HAL needs to try and address (maybe move dinner even earlier and have earlier shows?)
