Sail Date: Mar 2009

We flew the day prior to sailing into Miami and spent one evening at the the Homewood Suites - Blue Lagoon. We checked out of the hotel just before 11:00 and had the front desk call us a cab - with tip the cab was just under $30. We were at POM by 11:30, dropped our bags with a porter, and went inside to check-in. This check-in was very well organized - we had completed all documents ahead of time. We quickly finished the check-in process, waited a few minutes for general boarding, and were eating lunch on the Destiny before 12:00. Our dining room experience was great! Our two waiters (Java and Tatiana) were fabulous - order as many appetizers and entrEes as you wanted. We wound up bringing 4 of our 5 bottles of wine to dinner, and I was only charged the $10 corkage fee for two; I added the $20 savings to our tip at the end of the cruise. Buffet food, especially the NY Deli and omelettes in the morning was good. Both days at sea we started off with an hour of walking on the track. Lots of others were out trying to walk off their cruise food, and some parts of the track were slippery. Chair hogs were out early reserving their favorite spots. On the first sea day we enjoyed tea and a classical piano recital in the Onyx bar; on the last day we lined up for sushi near the casino bar. Grand Cayman was a new port for us and we want to go back. I did the snorkel and stingray tour with Moby Dick and can't say enough about how much fun this tour was. After some shopping my spouse did the glass bottom boat tour and thought it was great! In Ocho Rios we booked the Bamboo Beach Club through Carnival. The ship tied up early and the port area has a very industrial appearance. We found our hostesses and eventually were loaded onto busses for a 30 minute ride to the BBC. The beach and water were great, and we enjoyed watching the shows and college kids, but this was not the relaxing beach break we were looking for. The ship was tied up back in Miami about 7:00 AM and getting everyone off was very smooth. We signed up for the luggage express service ($20 each) and never saw our bags again until we arrived back in DC. The ship was in great shape - everything in our room worked and we encountered no maintenance issues. My spouse did not like the decor ("corrugated copper"), but I thought it was fine. Service was great, despite the spring break crowds. We would cruise Carnival and Destiny again!

Cabin Review

Our room was 1265 - ocean view. We don't spend much time in the room and did not see the need to pay extra for a higher floor or balcony. The room was large with a king bed, sofa, 3 small closets, and plenty of storage space. Bathroom was larger than we experienced on our two previous RCI cruises.
