My wife and I planned for an Alaskan cruise back in 2015. We selected Princess in that we both have sailed with Princess in the past and have appreciated the level of service that they provided. This cruise was one that showed me that changes have taken place within Princess at the top and are rippling through the organization.
When we planned the cruise, we let them know of special occasions, desire to dine in the Bayou Café, desire to sit at a table with 8 other people, robe in the cabin, etc. We planned to eat in the Café on June 30th, my birthday. When we arrived in our stateroom after embarkation, there was a note saying that we had reservations for June 28th, not the 30th like we requested. Not a problem, we would just call the DineLine and switch. I called – the phone kept ringing until there was a beep sound – the kind of sound you hear with an answering machine. I left a message asking for a switch. The next day, we heard nothing. I called again during their normal business hours. No answer. My wife called later. No answer. I called again. No answer. My wife called twice more. No answer. I am sure that Princess would have a great excuse for the problem.
We then called Passenger Services and asked for help. The woman that we talked with said that she would look into it and get back with us. Never heard from her after that. We called DineLine again and finally got through to someone. They told us that the restaurant was booked for the 6:30 slot that we requested. If we wanted to eat there, we could come at 8:30. We called Passenger Services again and were told by them that there was noting that they could do. Simply out of their hands - that was a great excuse.
We arrived in Vancouver two days prior to the cruise and enjoyed taking a tour bus around town. We visited Stanley Park which has an exceptional aquarium and totem pole park.
Ketchikan is a delightful community. We rented a car and visited Totem Bite Park and Saxman Village. Both gave us a very nice glimpse into the Alaska Native community. Alaska Car Rental does a great job of picking you up at the cruise terminal and dropping you off later.
Skagway is a great place to get educated about the Yukon gold rush of 1898. We booked the White Pass and Yukon Railway independently and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. You get real insight into what it would have been like to have been a prospector back in the 1890s.
