Sail Date: Jun 2016

After reading 4 bad reviews in a row right before our cruise I was not expecting much. We've been on 4 cruises in the last 5 years. Two on NCL in Europe and this was our second princess cruise in Alaska. This time was a family reunion and we had 20+ people in 6 cabins. I haven't written a review since our first cruise in 2011, since I enjoyed reading them before we left, I felt I should write a review of our experience recently. We sailed June 4th. We had a good time, but as far as comparing the cruise to other cruises we've been on, it didn't stand out in service that I've experienced before, so that is why I rated it average.

Gluten free dining.

My adult son has eaten gluten free since 2004. NCL was excellent everywhere with gluten free for our 2 cruises. He was not with us for our first Princess cruise, so this was our first experience GF with Princess. Princess was exceptional in the dining room, due to José, the head waiter. He really went beyond my son and my expectations to make sure he had GF options that were just like what was on the menu. He was always served ,gf bread within minutes of us sitting my down. José made sure our son ordered for the next day's meal in a timely manner at dinner. My son enjoyed all the options in the main dining room. GF eating in the dining room was excellent! GF pizza was available from the pizza place deck 15 and he enjoyed that most days. He got hamburgers without the bun and French fries from legends deck 15. However, The buffet service was horrible for gf. Finding out what was gf was a pain. Always had to talk to many people to get to the chef and he seemed bothered the two times we asked for lunch/dinner if something was GF. He'd never answer what we were asking about and instead go thru the entire buffet sort of pointing and saying "this is gf" in a hurried matter. My son didn't find much he wanted in the buffet for lunch or dinner and he is not a picky eater. One time we were told by a supervisor at the buffet that special diets were best handled in the main dining room as they only cook for 300 and the buffet cooks for 1500. It was a realistic truth. In the end he figured out GC breakfast in the buffet, which by far was the best meal to eat in the buffet. However, not all the workers knew what they had GF and the list below is what you can special order at the counter. They had gf plain and chocolate chip muffins. The plain seemed plain to me and my son preferred the chocolate chip although they had little chocolate chips are in them. They also did fresh gf pancakes and toast. That was nice. Gf cookies would have been nice according to my son since he had to watch us eating lots of cookies. International cafe always had one gf desert each day. That was nice.
