Sail Date: Jun 2016

My husband and I chose to sail on NCL's Breakaway for our 30th wedding anniversary. (I had previously sailed on the Getaway during its inaugural season - when I took my youngest daughter and her BFF as part of their high school graduation celebrations). So the DH and I were trying to figure out what do to for our upcoming 30th wedding anniversary - which was the week before my 50th birthday (that hurts to say, btw). We knew we wanted to do something special - but weren't quite sure what to do. We thought about doing a Viking River Cruise in Europe...but were a bit worried about how things stood over there from a safety perspective. We thought about doing a Baltic or British Isles cruise (on Princess) - but again...the safety thing was a concern and the airfare was just crazy when we were looking to book. So then we thought "Alaska!" and looked at the land-and-sea options (leaning towards Princess again), but the dates we wanted and the itinerary we liked were sold out for balcony and above! Ugh! And then it hit us...BERMUDA!!! Aboard the NCL Breakaway from NYC!!! (Did you hear the chorus of "Aaaaahhhhhhhh!!!"? I swear we did! LOL)

After a bit of research, we 'booked it, Dano' (Hawaii 5-O reference for you youngsters out there) through our favorite TA! We (meaning me LOL) chose a Spa Mini Suite (M9) and selected cabin 14764 (mid-ship). At the time we booked, NCL was doing running a special and we chose the Unlimited Beverage package and Specialty Dining Package. (I swear I did a lot of research prior to booking, but I somehow missed that the Specialty Dining Package only covered the 4 nights we were at sea - bummer). I booked us first class tickets on a flight to JFK the morning of the cruise, 4 nights at the Westin Times Square following the cruise and our return flight on Thursday 6/23. As we got closer to the cruise date, I will admit to a bit of anxiety about flying in the morning of the cruise - especially with the 3 pm sail time. We have cruised out of all of the ports in FL - and usually drive down the night before...but for this cruise, I booked us the first flight out (a direct flight) the morning of the sailing. I arranged for a car service to get us from JFK to the port.

DH and I made it to the airport with plenty of time to spare and had no issues getting through security and our plane left on time. After a perfectly smooth flight, we arrived at JFK a few minutes early, made our way to baggage claim where we collected our luggage and met our driver. Traffic was typical for NYC - and we made it to the port in about 50 minutes. Things at the port were a bit crazy with porters trying to collect bags for those sailing that day and lots of people and their bags were trying to leave...but we dropped off our bags and made it to security and check in relatively easily. Check in was a breeze and since we arrived early, we found a place to sit and 'people watch' until they called our boarding group (Group 6). We boarded the boat around 11 a.m. and made our way to the buffet on deck 15. Things weren't crowded yet and we grabbed a table by the window (and a cocktail).

New York (Manhattan)

It's dumb that I have to select a rating and enter comments for Ports without excursions. I selected "No" but still have to provide a rating and comments. Dumb.
