A super pleasant ship operated by people who seem to care.

Zuiderdam was wonderful

With a wonderful itinerary (particularly Berlin and St. Petersburg) we did our third HAL cruise. Having been on the Maasdam and Eurodam we knew what to expect and are not on a cruise boat to go on climbing walls or zip lines. This ship was in terrific repair, served very good food had very adequate entertainment and afforded us the opportunity to see some wonderful cities. Our veranda provided us a private space to read or sun and there are plenty of fun things to do if you don't want to just relax. We celebrated an anniversary and were treated very specially by the line and the ship. There is nothing to say negative about the boat and I'd like to mention that their captain is one of the most personable and involved captains we've experienced, often being spotted about the ship even ducking in for a little bit at the BB King and so on. We were on the Navigation deck so ran into officers a bit and each was professional, friendly and really seemed to care about our trip. I was most impressed, and the note posted about the ship being a big worn with hopes of having that improve in dry dock this past spring needs to be updated to say that the ship was in perfect shape. We used private excursions (imagine arriving in a crowd of 400 people returning from a train ride to Berlin!) so can't comment about those but a small group with a small vehicle is always superior we think. But we heard people sound happy.

Port Reviews

Copenhagen

HOHO trip and lots of walking but we explored Copenhagen thoroughly. While the Mermaid was famous it was not the highlight of this wonderful town. Expensive.

Rostock (Warnemunde)

Private tour of Berlin. EXTREMELY fascinating. Alla Tours...used them in four cities, wonderful job. This tour was fantastic.

Tallinn

Family member toured us around including taking us on a trolley ride in the city. Charming and wonderful city, reasonably small and a walking distance from the port. Cobblestones, wear good shoes!

St. Petersburg

2 days with Alla Tours, MAGNIFICENT tours of highly fascinating places. Given the history of the city particularly the more modern history this destination was unbelievable. The idea of walking around this city and seeing it after growing up fearing the Russians made it even more special.

Stockholm

Interesting and very pretty. While it's hard to do, understanding modern Stockholm and her issues with immigration and so on made the visit even more interesting.

Gothenburg

Charming but not particularly interesting, the ship arranged a shuttle into the city center. Not walkable without that and certainly worth getting off the boat. Sadly, given the wonderful locations we visited G'borg just didn't stack up as well. But nice little city and fun to walk around for a couple of hours.

Helsinki

Helsinki was not as pretty nor interesting as the first three stops though was charming in it's own way.
