We (a family of three adults) chose this cruise because of the itinerary, the attraction of a new mid-sized ship and the time of the trip. This was our fourth cruise across three different companies so we are not loyal to one brand. Embarkation at Civitavecchia was very organised & we were on board earlier than we expected. Our cabin, a Vista Suite on Floor 4 was extremely handy to everything & we thought this was a bonus. After a previous cruise on a larger ship, we prefer this size & at no times did it seem to disadvantage us. The décor is modern & different & will appeal to some & perhaps not to others. Many of the public rooms have dark colours which are not my preference. Main thoroughfares are lined with selling points, photo sales or poker machines which are not appealing. To be able to walk around deck 3 is also welcomed. We did not frequent the pool area much due to the weather or shore excursions.

Our cabin was probably a little smaller that previous cruises but was equipped with all one would want & expect. The main bed was huge & comfortable. The air-con was quiet & adjustable which made the temperature very comfortable. The additional power points & charging points were great. Storage was adequate for 3 adults. The bathroom was compact with a good shower but, as others have stated, the toilet is angled in a way that makes it uncomfortable for tall people. They are all the pluses but there is a big minus if you are in a triple suite. There is a major design problem with the fold out sofa bed as when it is out, there is very little room between the end of the bed & the desk. In fact, one has to crab walk sideways & because the frame is steel, you need to be very careful not to bump your legs. Also because the bed is between the main bed & the bathroom, imagine this manoeuvre at night in the dark. Even with a small torch, the person in this bed is often woken. I could not believe that in a new ship, this was the situation, There are other designs for a third sofa bed which would have been much more efficient & comfortable. For this reason, we would not consider travelling (with a third person) on the Koningsdam again. There are also vibrations on this ship that we have never experienced before. They were not constant & appeared intermittently but never to the extent they greatly concerned us.

We appreciated all the food options on the ship & never were we kept waiting. Breakfast areas could be busy but we always found a table & if you knew where to go, waiting was minimal. There was also a huge array of options. Most nights we dined in the MDR & shared a table. Service was generally good but on some occasions OK. Because we shifted tables most nights we experienced different staff. Main courses were a bit light on with few vegetables. The Pizza & Burger bars near the pool were also good options for a late lunch. The overall standard of food was very good without being outstanding. We did not visit the speciality restaurants.
