I so wanted to love the Thomson Majesty! Our cruising history started on the Thomson Celebration and we were nostalgic! We were booked on the Mediterranean Medley, leaving from Palma. We were travelling with two other couples. Our flight from Exeter was smooth and slightly ahead of time. We’d forgotten about luggage carousels and trollies but soon found our way through the melee. Coach transfer was efficient. We were on board by lunchtime, so we could explore. Sadly, my initial impressions remained with us for the rest of the cruise. Our cabin, 938, was purportedly partially obstructed view but in my opinion was a fully obstructed view. The cabin was relatively spacious – the beds set in twin formation. There were two chests of drawers and plenty of hanging space. There was a cabinet where there used to be a fridge! There was a small flat screen TV (which collapsed on itself within two days but was promptly replaced). There was a dressing table and one chair. The bathroom was grim. Ingrained black mould in the silicone. It was a wet room with a very small shower curtain. There was no shaver plug but there was a wall hung hairdryer. The soap and shower gel were in refillable containers attached to the wall. The washbasin pop up plug had obviously popped out as it was replaced with a standard plug attached by a chain.

We were instructed to attend muster drill on the open deck at 7.45 p.m. with full life jackets on. This was a long, drawn out and disorganized. Good job it was not raining. Then off to dinner. It is freedom style dining and we had a table for six. The menu seemingly looked good. Two appetizers; two soups and a salad, a meat dish, a fish dish, a pasta and a vegetarian selection. Always available was chicken breast or salmon. Steaks were available at the same price as in the Bistro. It became a bit of a joke that every main course came with three slices of carrots and a broccoli sprig! There were no lobster tails or beef wellingtons or racks of lamb! Strangely we thought that the food in both the Seven Seas Dining Room and the buffet was better at lunchtime. We went to the Seven Seas for breakfast where there was an opportunity to help yourself to a buffet or be waiter serviced. We tried both. It was as though they were rationing tea and coffee! Halfway through the cruise, the breakfast buffet disappeared and we seasoned cruisers know what that means!! True enough, a note in the cabin confirmed a “small and contained” outbreak of norovirus. One of the two deck buffets was shut down.

We were on an all inclusive package, which allowed us brands like Smirnoff and Gordons, so was fine. The wine did leave something to be desired.
