Fun Family Cruise

Sail Date: March 2009
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

Embarkation was fast & easy. We arrived at the port around 12:15 and were on the ship at the buffet around 1:00. It took a few minutes longer for us to check in because 2 of our children were with the in-laws & we needed to double check that they were on our ship board account. We had an aft balcony cabin. The room was clean & well kept all week. The first night we called for washcloths and an extra pillow. Received the pillow promptly, but had to wait until morning to get the washcloths. We met our room steward Jean the first day & really didn't see him afterward. We left notes if we needed anything & always received what we asked for. The room was always clean and when he made the beds up at night he always tucked my sons stuffed animal in his bed. Always had clean towels & washcloths. My only complaint would be that they needed to replace the shower curtain, in my opinion there was a little too much yuck(mold & mildew) at the bottom. More

We didn't have any problems with food being cold. Usually just right. Buffet was adequate, but a variety of food wasn't available. Pretty standard fare. If you walked toward the aft of the ship the lines were shorter and there were more tables available. We liked the ones on the balcony. Dinners were good & our waiter Perdana was wonderful!(We had 1st seating in the l'biscus) He always took time to get our orders correct & was really great with our youngest son. He explained he could get us coffee, tea, water, soft drinks, or wine, but if we wanted a mixed drink he would send someone over to take that as it would be faster. Sure enough there were a couple of waitress's around all week to take your mixed drink orders. Food was served in a timely manner & was hot.

There were not a lot of activities aboard, but we didn't really want any. For us the cruise was to spend time together as a family and relax. That's exactly what we received. We loved the fact that there were others cruising with us from around the world & enjoyed people watching. We enjoyed the ports of call. We only took one excursion booked from the ship. It was well planned & organized.

Complaints are very few. My in-laws had a non working toilet for about 3 hours. They weren't too happy about that! I wish the kids club had better activities. My 5 year old went a few times but grew bored and didn't want to return after that. He went to the pizza party & the night they had the super hero parade(which was very cute), and a few times during the afternoons.

Overall we really enjoyed our trip. The deck area around the pools was nice and only really got crowded on the second sea day. The entertainment team was kept to one end so if you didn't want to participate or hear the cacophony you didn't need to. Tendering on & off the ship was pretty quick & painless. The day we were at Grand Cayman we didn't even get tender tickets. We just waited until they said anyone could get off the ship now & walked right off to the tender. Since we didn't have an excursion planned and were just going to explore on our own this was great & we still had plenty of time! Our favorite port was Cayo. Lovely island, great beach. The waves made it fun for the kids. The only complaint would be that the white beach chairs were extremely moldy & dirty.

Disembarkation was also quick & easy. We were the 4th color called off the ship. We waited until 7:00 and had breakfast in the dining room because we thought the buffet would be too packed, but I guess others had the same idea. We never had to even wait for a table. After breakfast went to the theater, which was where we were assigned to wait until we were called, waited 10 minutes & it was time to leave. Line to leave was smooth & steady & by 8:30 we were off the ship & on our way home! Less

Cabin review: MSC Orchestra Balcony Clarinetto Deck 8222

We had an aft balcony(room 8222) There was a lot of cabin vibration, but it did not bother us. We slept great! The bed linens need to be updated, they were a little worn. But the towels were thick and new. Shower curtain needed replacing, had a little mold & mildew on bottom. Lots of closet & drawer space. Bathroom was adequate size & had lots of shelf & under cabinet storage. Balcony view wonderful! Plenty of room for all 4 of us, & 3 of us are pretty big. View from balcony spectacular, lots of sunrises & sunset!

Port and Shore Excursions

my husband, his parents & one of our sons went on the tour of Tulom. They had a great time and they thought the tour was informative & interesting. The rest of us spent the day at Paradise beach. It was beautiful & there were lots of things for the kids to do. For $10 you had access to all their water toys, trampolines, climbing rock & slide, snorkeling gear, banana boats, floats. The restrooms and changing areas were clean. We shared the best plate of nachos I have had in a long time!

Grand Cayman was beautiful. This is the one place I wish we had done an excursion, but we were trying to save some $$ so we didn't. We walked a lot along the shore & shops. Very nice.

Key West was nice, but it would have been nice to have a little longer to explore. We took the old town trolley tour. It was very informative and a good way to see all of the island. It was rather long, for the amount of time we had & by the time we took the tour & ate some lunch it was time to go.
