I began my cruise with a tour of Boston which was to set the pace for a wonderful trip. As a Canadian and originally from the Maritimes, we share much in common with this part of the United States. It was the destination for a number of my relatives in the early 1900s. Following my tour, I proceeded to embarkation, which was flawless and quick. Well done. My choice, as a solo traveler on this trip, was an inside cabin on deck 5. Couldn't have been better, as it gave me ready access to the lower promenade (deck 6) full walk around, by way of a flight of stairs. The experience of walking the promenade while we were underway and while coming into port was a true experience at sea. I would take this cruise again for that experience alone.

The cabin (682) met my needs entirely and have no difficulty recommending it. It was clean and quiet. All systems and equipment functioned perfectly. The staff including attendants and room service were excellent. I made the suggestion to HA that it would be more sanitary to use single wipe disinfecting cloths on vanities and other flat surfaces. In my opinion, this would reduce the transmission of germs and viruses from room to room. Overall, I would rate the stateroom as "entirely satisfactory".

My choice for meals is almost invariably the buffet where I commonly find the food prepared well and served hot with sufficient variety. I also don't enjoy dining room experiences in general. There is one recommendation that I made regarding the presentation of the food in the buffet. Holland America kitchen staff place the food items you want on your plate, as opposed to passengers serving themselves. In my opinion, this is an excellent choice, again for sanitary reasons. I much prefer that. However HA needs to find a more effective way to communicate what is on offer, as the items are not easily distinguished nor readily identifiable. As an example, signs indicating the names of the dishes were almost invariably in the wrong place. Minor point, but a bit of effort here may avoid food being wasted due to wrong selection and improve overall customer satisfaction. Overall, I would rate dining as "entirely satisfactory".
