This was our 2nd transatlantic cruise on the Eclipse, our first was 2 years ago. While we enjoyed the Eclipse, and it's amenities, this cruise not did not meet the high standards set on our prior sailing.
Service in the Sonata dining room and Ocean View cafe had declined. On our first crossing - in the Ocean View cafe - during breakfast hours, waiters constantly walked around serving coffee. Not on this trip. Some plates and cutlery had dried food left on them. Service in the Sonata dining room was slow. The second evening of our trip, dinner service took almost 2 hours. Complaining to the Dining Room Manager did improve service for the remainder of our trip.
We were under the impression that a refit was done, yet there were high traffic areas of the ship that were untouched. Many of the upholstered chairs in the Sonata dining room were frayed and worn. The Bistro on 5 - empty on our first crossing - and 2 years later....still empty. The International Bar on Deck 5 - empty on our first crossing - and 2 years later....still empty. The disco, for the most part, empty on both cruises (perhaps it's the age group sailing on a transatlantic). The Cellar on deck 5 - was improved during the refit with more comfortable seating and intimate setting. But, it's name gave the wrong impression. Wine, cocktails and beer were served in this quiet, unassuming lounge.
Cabin was comfortable and well maintained. Our steward provided a kettle with a varied selection of teas and instant coffees. We were happy with this service.
Wonderful 3-hour tour, including a conch salad demonstration, where we actually were able to sample the finished product. Photo stops at the Cloisters, Parliament and Court Buildings, as well as forts.
The ship provided a shuttle to the City of Le Havre from the port. Although it was a cool, damp day, we enjoyed the City and shops.
Trip to Sintra, Estoril, Cascais and Cap Roc. 4- hour driving tour with photo stops. Knowledgable tour guide, spoke very good English.
Embarkation went very smoothly. There were enough check-in stations open to keep the lines constantly moving.
