We wanted to see the Christmas Markets along the Danube. The Romantic Danube itinerary offered just that and gave us what we thought would be the best ports. We were particularly impressed with Budapest, Melk, Vienna and Nuremberg. We wish that we had been able to spend more time in Budapest but the air routing that Viking used had us arrive late on the day of sailing (with a five hour layover in Frankfurt!). If doing it again we would recommend extending the Budapest portion of the trip. We did extend the Nuremberg portion by three days and it was well worth it.

the ship (Jarl) was lovely and the design was well thought out. We had a French Balcony cabin and definitely enjoyed the view and being able to open the door. We did not find the small size of the cabin to be a real problem. Every meal on board was a pleasure.

If visiting Christmas Markets you would be wise to have a minimal breakfast in order to make the most of the local foods available in the markets. We lusted for the goose and duck dishes in Budapest's Christmas Market but we still had breakfast to digest. Budapest is on our list to revisit in the future.

Cabin Review

French Balcony

Cabin D

Clean, quiet, well laid out, functional and usable. the bathroom was quite nice and the shower with glass doors definitely superior to ocean cruise ships that we have been on. we were impressed that the cabin was so quiet. The ice machine was right outside our door and we never heard it. Noise from the next cabin and those above and below ours never intruded. The location made access to all parts of the ship easy.
