HAL's 5* reputation does not fit with what you experience; very disappointed.

Cabin: Deluxe Ocean-View Verandah Stateroom
Traveled with children

Having never before tried Holland America, but, knowing they were rated 5*, we took advantage of the spring break, hoping for lovely time, good food and good weather. Sadly, these expectations were not met (apart from the weather).

Safety drill:

The drill was chaotic, assembling on the promenade deck, bunched up under the lifeboat you were assigned to and then given a roll call and very brief safety instructions. The deck is really not that wide.

Cabin Review

Deluxe Ocean-View Verandah Stateroom

Cabin VA

Good location, Midship cabin on the starboard side of the ship, This cabin is located at the start of the lifeboats on deck 4. It has a larger that normal balcony, bordered on one side by the a disabled cabin, and, to the other a lifeboat. As the balcony extends to the width of the lifeboat, it it overlooked by the cabins on the upper decks, so the only privacy is right outside the veranda door.

Not that all the doors/windows are mirrored glass, making the interior seem very dark and gloomy, both in the cabins and elsewhere on the ship.

Air conditioning can only be adjusted for heat, not speed - I was driven mad by the noise of it all night long, it was very, very loud

Good sized bathroom with bath, shower overhead, toilet and sink. There is a shaving point in the bathroom, above the sink at ceiling height. Anyone needing to apply makeup will have to do it in the bathroom, as due to the lighting in the cabin and at the dressing table, you cannot see to use it. Hair drying needs to be done at the dressing table, as the only two power point are located there.

Comfy bed, but if you opt for single beds, you will not have the use of a duvet, only thin cover, making for a chilly night.

Small couch with fabric seat and fake leather back to it - the plastic smelled awful.

Small minibar, where you pay for everything, water included. These items are not covered by your beverage pack, not are drinks ordered on room service.

The wardrobes are terrible, you have to leave the bathroom door open and all lights on in the cabin and bathroom to even attempt to see anything in the wardrobe. The biggest problem with that being that you cannot see into the safe, nor see when you are coding it.

Cramped cabin, big veranda, but watch out for the water being emptied onto yours during cabin cleaning. and the paint splatters hittin the deck of the veranda - my mother and I both had to abandon sitting on the veranda due to liquids coming from above on various days. The balcony never got used much due to this inconvenience.

We were given towels for use off the ship (which of course would cost if lost). I had to repeatedly ask to get the bath robes for the cabin, but they appeared eventually.

My elderly mother was in 4071 (outside cabin few doors along) which had an obstructed view between lifeboats, with a floor to ceiling window, and a walkway for the crew for lifeboat maintenance. identical layout, though, as she had no balcony, the bed was at the window end, with the couch opposite the dressing table. as you entered the centre of the cabin.

Despite being a party travelling together, we were allocated different lifeboats.
