My wife and I have been on many cruises primarily with Royal Caribbean. We thought we would give Holland America a shot and we are happy that we did. Flew in the morning of embarkation since the Fort Lauderdale hotels were expensive and the reviews were pretty bad. Arrived at the airport and found that HA wanted $19 per person to catch their bus but a taxi was cheaper and more personalized. No huge traffic backups getting to the ship like we did at Galveston and the port was far more organized and boarding was easy.
The ship is relatively old but clean and well maintained. Slight problem with the toilets due to one of the tank problems but it was quickly remedying. Air-conditioning in the room was adequate but I might be concerned if we were on a summer cruise.
We found that the lack of children on the cruise made it more enjoyable for the adults and because there are no water slides and other kid-related activities, better for us. Entertainment varied from spectacular to average. Adagio in the Explorer Lounge is a violinist and pianist playing classical music and they are extraordinarily talented and enjoyable..far more talented than the Electrical violin group Synergy. Jeremy at the Piano Bar is also excellent. We have heard better voices before but he plays well and his musical interpretation of American Pie is not to be missed. BB King also put on a nice show.
Nice view from the balcony and a couple of chairs and a table provided. Note that this room was one of the few that was solid metal below the rail instead of glass which obstructed the view somewhat but not really a big deal. Bring a night light unless you are okay sleeping with he bathroom light on. Safe provided. Small TV but adequate. Thanks for having Fox News accessible. Beds were very comfortable as were the pillows. Luggage fit under the beds fine and closet space was adequate. Smoking is allowed on the balcony which was a turn off for those of us wanting to get some fresh air and enjoy the view when your neighbor is puffing away. Announcements by the Cruise Director can barely be heard in the cabin...should be an option to turn on to listen or turn off if not wishing to be disturbed. Room was quiet and no noise could be heard from adjoining staterooms. No noise from entertainment venues could be heard.
