This was our 5th cruise on the Gem. We are from NYC, so the Gem RT New York is very convenient. We enjoy getting away from NYC winter and going to the Caribbean. The Gem was refurbished in Oct-Nov 2015, the colors are now more neutral, black and off white and decor sleeker and more modern in the buffet, La Cucina, Bliss Lounge, among others. There is more seating at and around various bars, perhaps for those who purchase drink packages. On rough waters La Cucina is moved to a section of the buffet and still serves the same menu.
We ate at both Le Bistro and La Cucina. I particularly enjoyed the mussels appetizer at Le Bistro. My husband is a fussy eater and had a greater variety at La Cucina. He enjoyed the tomato and mozzeralla appetizer, pasta and meat balls, and the delicious ice cream with espresso and biscotti. I had the fried calamari, which was a large appetizer, the wonderful osso boco and the same dessert.
The Duo Balskatt was my favorite entertainment. The do a Cirque type performances. They are an amazing couple to watch.
Cabin was as expected, compact and neat. The shower was particularly enjoyable with a strong flow and hot water. One drawer did need repair because the entire front fell off which required probably some gluing, as did one of the overhead beams over the small desk. The problems were resolved within a day.
A very knowledgeable and friendly bus driver/guide. We got to see a lush, greener part of PR and then still had time to roan Old San Juan on our own.
Megan's Bay beach is always beautiful and safe, Very relaxing. We get to stop twice for photo opps on the way.
Wonderful time with our guide, meeting with 5 artists at 2 private homes, 1 event villa and 2 galleries at various locations around the Island. One artist was a little delayed , so the guide made an unexpected stop at a delicious French bakery. Beyond our expectations.
We are from NYC and this is a very convenient port.
