We arrived in San Diego a couple of days early to enjoy a four star hotel booked through Priceline. It was a bargain, and the time spent in San Diego was almost as enjoyable as the cruise. The cruise terminal was a short cab ride from our hotel. This was our third cruise out of San Diego on the Oosterdam. There were a large number of senior citizens on this cruise, including us (my wife and I are at the "lower" end of "senior"). We like the quieter atmosphere that goes with an older group of passengers, although, for some reason, this cruise appeared to have more walkers, scooters and wheelchairs than our previous voyages on the Oosterdam. That tends to slow down traffic just a bit. Each cruise on the Oosterdam has been very enjoyable. The ship is still in very nice shape, although it is showing a few signs of wear in places, such as some of the carpeting. The crew is friendly and attentive. Our room stewards were great, and our dining room steward was the best. The bedding in our room was excellent; very comfortable. Embarkation was a breeze; we arrived at around 11:30 and were on the ship by noon. Our cabin, a mini-suite on the Upper Verandah deck, was ready by about 1:45. That gave us time to enjoy a light lunch on the Lido deck. After two nice days at sea we docked in Mazatlan. Having been in Mazatlan twice before, we decided to spend the day on the ship and booked a day in the thermal suite. Upon showing up to use the spa, we found that the ship had gone into Code Red due to an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness among the passengers and crew. The thermal suite was shut down for the rest of the cruise, so we got a full refund. They also shut down the hot tubs on board. From that point on, extraordinary steps were taken to prevent spread of the illness. We were basically not allowed to dish up any food ourselves, were not allowed to touch anything in the shops without rubber gloves and constantly were washing and using hand sanitizer. We and our traveling companions made it through the cruise without getting ill and it only put a slight damper on our overall activities. In Puerto Vallarta we took the mini-4x4 adventure. It was fun, although extremely dusty. A word of caution to contact lens wearers wear glasses or very good goggles on the tour. The Yamaha Rhinos were easy and fun to drive, although they did not appear to be very well maintained. The tour went through back roads, small villages and dry stream beds on a circuitous route from and back to hacienda Dona Engracia (which is also where the Town, Country and Tequila, and the Mini-ATV tours go). In Cabo, we took the Discover Todos Santos tour. It was enjoyable, although I wouldn't do it again. The bus drive is about an hour and a half to get there and the town itself was not that impressive. Lunch at the Hotel California was quite good. Our guide, Marco, did a very good job of describing the geography and history of the area. We tipped him well. Our last sea day was enjoyable and the disembarkation was very quick and efficient. As with our past cruises, the meals were excellent, both in the dining room and the Pinnacle Grill. Service was excellent overall. We probably won't cruise the Mexican Riviera again, at least for quite some time. There was a noticeable increase in armed troops and police in each port. We did feel safe, but after three visits we have no strong desire to see the Mexican Riviera again.

Tiny shower. Very nice room overall with a roomy balcony. Having two sinks was a nice feature. The bedding was wonderful.
