We travelled on the Golden princess from San Francisco to Sydney on October 2015. The experience was fantastic as per the review I wrote at the time. However, I could not believe how much the standards have dropped in just 3 months. The enthusiasm and professionalism of the crew has disappeared, and the presentation of the ship has deteriorated.

The cruise was a 7 day cruise out of Melbourne to Tasmania, Adelaide and then back to Melbourne. Embarkation was very efficient with our platinum status meaning that we got through the check in and security lines very quickly. We stayed in a mini suite two doors up from where we stayed on the San Francisco/ Sydney trip. The balcony door could not be locked as all the locking mechanisms had rusted and fell apart. Furthermore, we had to call maintenance because the door would not seal and any sort of wind resulted in whistling sound through the seal. The balcony railing needed varnishing, the sofa had a tear, and tiles were lifting off the bathroom floor. The suite looked very tired. One day we opened the door to the balcony, as the wind rushed in the roof of the cabin lifted!

On the first night we went to the Sabatini’s speciality restaurant. This was a great experience on the last trip and, we thought, worth the additional cover charge. It was a great disappointment. The wait staff were unimpressive and we had to get their attention to get finger bowls etc. The main meal (veal) was very fatty and when we politely told the head waiter of our concerns his response was: ‘I have had a few complaints from customers about the fattiness, but I have checked with the chef and he assures me that this is how the meal should be”.
