Solo travellers are always an inconvenient after thought for Cunard.

My third short break with Cunard and like last time I noticed things missing, presumably to save Cunard more money at the expense of passenger enjoyment. The brochure advertised bath robe and slippers were not provided in the stateroom and had to be requested. As a solo traveller, despite paying a two passenger rate, we have to make do with small 50ml toiletries rather than useful 100ml. Also, despite being a Gold member, single cruisers also only get a half bottle of Pol Acker where as if there were two people in the cabin, they would receive a full bottle. On my first Cunard voyage on QE we were offered peti four and there were some at door to help yourself to, however, on both crossings on QV this has not been the case and they have to be requested!

I found out on my third cruise that when you enter the Spa raffle you have to be at the draw to stand a chance of winning and this means experiencing a 30min sales pitch and unfortunately missing sail away. When I did get to the sail away, I had either missed the champagne being sold or there wasn’t any.

One of the biggest and inexcusable mistakes Cunard made was to repeat the menu of my cruise in November and the same menu was due to be repeated that night on the next cruise too! Quite why a limited and repetitive menu is thought to be acceptable when return passengers are being encouraged and paying a not insignificant fare for the cruise, I am not sure.

Cabin Review

I was disappointed with two aspects of this stateroom, first the hot water tap took 4-5 minutes to start running with hot water and secondly there was a strong urine smell upon lifting the toilet lid. I brought both to the attention of the room steward and the smell was partially helped by either the steward cleaning or my frequent use (hard to say which). I’m told the hot water was due to the retro fit of the single cabins and nothing could be done. The shower always came out hot, although whether this is because I had patiently waited for the hot water to reach the sink before using the shower, I am not sure. There was also noise from steward locker room which sounded like the steward using an ice machine which woke me each morning. Noise when docking also appeared to come from the Bow thrusters. There is not much space between the bed and wall/window so it is unlikely to suit someone of poor mobility. The room wasn’t immaculately clean as black bits like mouse droppings/or flick and lots of hairs in the bathroom were clearly visible. I found it strange there were no leaflets on the tour day until after I had returned from the trip! I wonder whether the room steward has other staterooms away from the single staterooms and this affects the time which is able to be dedicated to the single staterooms.

I did find the location of the stateroom ideal – I was on the same floor as my table in the Britannia dining room and the 2nd floor is also used for open breakfast and lunch sittings. It is also convenient for the Theatre and very close to the ‘A’ lifts and stairwell. There was no audible noise from the theatre, lifts or casino. I found plenty of wardrobe space for my clothes and under the bed storage plentiful too. The TV screen was wall mounted which was ideal. The best feature of the stateroom (apart from the location) has to be being able to look out of the window whilst laying/sitting in bed!
