Traveled with children

This is our 2nd Christmas cruise, 1st was on Radiance 3 years ago. I (40's) travelled with my husband (40's) and our daughter 7. We had an interconnecting cabin with my parents, both in their 70's.

We had Grand Suites on deck 10. Both families appreciated having a bigger bathroom as well as the extra's that came with a suite such as not having to line up for tickets to the ice skating show and the use of the concierge club.

We parked at the Opera House had had a short walk around to the ship. We arrived about 11, gave our luggage in and were able to check in. Found our first perk, a much shorter check in line so we were on about 11.30/12. We had lunch in Windjammer’s. There was a good variety of food and all looked fresh. Sydney put on lovely weather so we had a swim and cocktail before we sailed. We had an early dinner in Windjammers and watched them untie the ropes then headed to our balcony to watch us sail through the heads.

Cabin Review

Grand Suite

Cabin GS

very comfy bed, a bit of noise from them moving the pool chairs around, one deck up to Windjammers / pool and one deck down to concierge club. lovely big balcony. plenty of storage space for 3 people. tv near the foldout sofa so not really set up for mum and dad to watch tv when child trying to go to sleep. fridge kept things cool but not cold. only opened the sofa bed out ⅔ of the way so we could leave it set up all the time. If you had teenagers or adults you would need to pack it away each day.

Port Reviews

Picton

Picton (free shuttle bus) the weather was lovely so we explored the shops, had a coffee and found a great children’s playground.

Sydney (Australia)

We parked at the Opera House had had a short walk around to the ship

Wellington

Wellington was overcast and cool (taxi cost $25 or shuttle bus $10 each). We explored the museum Te Papa (free) for about 4 hours.

Napier

Napier (free shuttle bus) was again cloudy and windy so after a coffee and another great playground we headed back to the ship.

Tauranga

Tauranga was again cloudy and cool. We explored the main shopping area ($10 shuttle bus) and then came back and caught the Pepi Toot. This is a cute little “train” only holds 15 passengers and drives on the road. The very informative guide stops regularly for photo opportunities and to explain the local history. $15 for an adult $5 for a child and the trip takes about 40 min. Lots of shops within in walking distance of the ship so next time I wouldn’t take the shuttle in to town

Auckland

We arrived at Auckland on Christmas Day so all the shops were shut. The i site staff were very helpful. I had found out before we left that the hop on and off bus would be running so knew we would at least get a tour of the city. Only half the tour was running, the blue line was closed, but they reduced the ticket price. The i site staff were also able to sell us tickets to the aquarium (small but well presented) and the sky tower. The sky tower was so busy and didn’t seem to have any staff to organise people in to lines of pre purchased tickets so there was extra waiting. The view from the top was amazing as there was very little cloud but still cold. It warmed up in the late afternoon.
