What a great idea is to break the winter in half by going to the Caribbean! And what better place to do it than in a full immersion into a Retirement Home experience!

It was our second cruise with Celebrity. It wasn’t a repeat of the great experience we had on Celebrity Constellation last year, so now I feel like exploring other cruise lines. My reasons for choosing Celebrity again were: professionally done classical music, tasteful comedy, tranquil solarium, and outdoor café dining. That didn’t turn out to be so on this cruise. There was no classical music, the comedy was dull, the solarium was a chlorinated box, but the outdoor dining was still there and was great.

New for us were: live grass, which smelled so good and was very well taken care of; Glass making shows, which we both liked and my husband didn’t miss one; largest library we’ve seen on any ship with very good selection.

Cabin Review

Inside Stateroom 12

Cabin 12

We always choose inside room, guarantied cabin option. It's the best value. The cabin #3148 was the biggest we ever had. It was very well maintained, looked new and always clean. The shower had glass shower doors, many storage spaces everywhere. Although, at night and some during the day it was a haunted house. My husband thought it was possibly a cardboard/trash compactor and some machinery below us.

Port Reviews

Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

We used a bus from our hotel to get to port. When we got there, the driver asked us to remain in the bus while he unloaded our luggage. He put all luggage for about 25 people in a pile and told us we can now go in for check in. We were very uncomfortable leaving our suitcases on a side of the road with an elderly and very frail man who didn’t seem to know what he is doing. I thought it would be a miracle if we get out bags.

St. Thomas

We took a bus/minivan with two other couples to Megan's Bay-$8 per person each way. Megan's Bay is a park, so it has entrance fee-$4 per person. The beach has a small restaurant and bar w/US like prices. Piece of pizza -$3.95, beer $5-$8. All throughout the beach there are wooden picnic tables w/benches which are free. No chairs/umbrellas for rent. The beach was clean, quiet, true National Park experience. No one sell anything on the beach, lots of shade, birds everywhere.

St. Kitts (Port Zante)

The ship was in port from 7 am to 3 pm. This made it for a short day. We like to be first off the ship and last back on. So when we got on shore so early, we had a hard time finding anyone to share the bus with. We finally found someone that took us to S. Friar’s Bay for $15 for both of us each way. The views on our way up were just amazing! I was told that if we go more to the left there is better snorkeling. It was a cloudy day with only one cruise ship in port, so the beach looked deserted w/many bars boarded up. We ended up stopping at the Discovery Beach Bar. I negotiated price for two chairs and an umbrella from $20 to $10. Rum punch was very good (with passion fruit berries and nutmeg shavings), small-$6 each. I found snorkeling to be very limited, but I still enjoyed a few colorful fish I saw. Our beach chair were very close to water. We enjoyed a peaceful day filled with sounds of the waves and tropical birds. Again, no one bothered us or tried to sell us anything.

Barbados

We went to Carlisle Bay, which is south of port. Ended up at Harbour Lights Nightclub. The bus was $15 for both of us (lots of people on the bus) each way. They charged us $15 to enter with two chairs and an umbrella and had us put on wristbands. There is no shade on the beach! It had the hottest sun that I’ve ever felt. The beach had a few merchants walking back and forth with wooden craft and many people constantly in our face trying to sell boat rides to see turtles and shipwrecks. They had outdoor open shower with fresh water and three changing rooms adjacent to the stage. Their restaurant had the most expensive food and drink prices we’ve seen on all our trips. Small hamburger with literally one table spoon of salad and a few French fries - $16, rum- $9, beer-$5 for a small 8 oz bottle. We didn’t have any choices where to get out food because they had signs posted everywhere stating that you would be thrown off there beach if you buy your food somewhere else. For next time, I would recommend to go farther south, toward a pier. There are plenty of public entrances (free) with bathrooms and wooden picnic tables in partial shade. I also saw some (very few) trees where one can stop. Carlisle Bay has good snorkeling. If you are a good swimmer, you can swim to an area where boats take people to see turtles (I didn’t see any) and ship wrecks (which are just sunken boats) with lot of colorful fish activity.
