Sail Date: Dec 2015
Cabin: Penthouse with Large Balcony

We recently got off the NCL Gem 12/03/15 to 12/13/15 sailing to the Eastern Caribbean. Overall it was a nice cruise. This was cruise 11 for me and 8 for my husband. This was my 3rd NCL cruise. My husband's 2nd.

We were at the pier around 10:30 am, in line to check in at the VIP stations shortly there after and then in the VIP lounge by 10:45 am. We got there a bit early so we waited in the lounge and talked to fellow passengers for a while. We didn't actually get on the ship until about noon. A little bit of a letdown but it was a cruise so we went with the flow.

Service: It was excellent pretty much everywhere we went. Dining, shops, casino...everywhere we went, the staff was eager to please.

Penthouse with Large Balcony

Cabin SF

We had an aft facing penthouse suite with a large balcony (8130). The balcony isn't large. It's a somewhat elongated, narrow, pie shape. We were on the very end of the ship on the starboard side so this could be why it was narrow. We were happy to there and the small disappointment soon faded. The room was spacious enough for the both of us with plenty of storage and a nice seating area. My husband loved having the Nespresso machine in the room. I think that alone made it worth it for him for the upgrade. They also had really cute tea boxes laid out and would replenish it every day. We enjoyed the fresh fruit and champagne as well. The supposed fresh flowers were wilted on day 1 and mostly dead by day 5. Our cabin steward was Edwin. What a sweetheart. He was always smiling even when I'm sure he didn't want to. We really liked him and he kept the room spotless. He even showed us how to make a mouse towel animal! Our butler was Akhmed. So nice and so accommodating. The concierge was Carlos. He was nice and stopped by nearly every day to ask how things were. Having breakfast and lunch in Cagney's every day was superb. We had a daily snack served to us each day around 3:00pm. It was a very nice treat that we hadn't expected. We also had free movies in our room. New movies like Trainwreck, Minions, Pitch Perfect 2...etc. Not movies from 1989. It was nice after a long day to unwind and watch a movie. The cabin had new carpeting during the recent dry dock. I wish they had updated the bathroom sink. Ours was cracked. The tub had wear spots and the closet doors in the dressing area didn't close and popped open during choppy seas. I had to jimmy rig the door with a hair tie. The crown jewel to this cabin is the aft balcony view. WOW! The views were breathtaking. It was a little noisy at times from the engines but we barely heard a peep from our next door neighbors and since we didn't have neighbors on the other side, it was pretty much a peaceful sailing.
