My husband and I just got back from our first cruise in many years. This was a test of sorts to see if we are 'cruise ready' for the next phase in our lives as empty nesters/early retiree's. (mid 50's) Chose HAL because of price and itinerary. Feedback was that we would be the youngest on the cruise.

So, yes, the average age was about 10 years + older than us. But we realized almost immediately that was a great thing. The people on the cruise were the most real and authentic group of people I have encountered in one place. No need to pretend or to try to impress. They just were enjoying life and very willing to impart knowledge and wisdom. I was like a sponge!

Additionally, food was quality not quantity. Excellent efforts in cleanliness and health precautions. And the small ship allowed for intimacy as well as ease on and off the boat at ports. What a great feeling walking past the hoards of people waiting to get on the big boats!

Large Ocean-View Stateroom

Really nice size for a cruise ship room.

Port Reviews

Cabo San Lucas

We were able to take a nice walk (about 3 miles in total) around the area. Even enjoyed a lovely lunch. But the area is very touristy, including the beach near by. Lots of almost aggressive vendors. One major note: When going back to the ship you may see very long lines trying to get on the tenders. Walk right past them and to the Holland America gate. No lines at all! Small ship-huge plus!

San Diego

Best city ever! And everything you would ever need or want is within walking distance to the ship. No touristy feel at all once you leave the dock.

Mazatlan

Mixed feelings about this port. The ex-pats have formed a volunteer tourist group that makes it extremely easy to get around. No need for an excursion if you just want to get a feel for the area and enjoy walking. On the other hand, it is extremely touristy! Even the cliff divers have "staff" that approach you to ask for money for the diver if you are taking pictures from your own camera. It is an amazing site though, and they certainly take risks!

Puerto Vallarta

This was my favorite port. With that said, you have to be a bit of a renegade to enjoy it the way we did. There are city buses right outside where the cruise docks. (and that area itself is very limited in vendors which is great!) We took the city bus, gave the driver $1 USD for the two of us (and apparently we overpaid!!) The bus drops you off in the center of PV, right near the Malecon. (board walk) The area along the water is just beautiful. We walked and ate and walked again. Not nearly as touristy as the other ports. And when we were done, we stood on the street and looked for a bus that said Walmart. The Walmart is directly across from where the ship docks. Another $1 USD and we were back at the ship!
