Didn't realize it was a mature person cruise; still overall really good.

This was our first cruise, and we booked for 2 weeks to celebrate our honeymoon. We are 26 and 33. When we booked the trip, we didn't realize that Holland America was geared towards a mature crowd (50+). We are not big drinkers or gamblers, so we were looking for a more relaxing experience with some adventure, not a party scene.

Overall, the cruise was excellent. We did the Ultimate Snorkelling in Grand Turk, the Amazing Secret River in Cozumel, and the Champagne Sail in St. Thomas. All excursions were amazing and worth every penny.

The food on the ship was all very good with lots of different options. The atmosphere of the ship was very clean and elegant. The only downfall was that the majority of the actives were geared towards an older crowd, such as anti aging seminars, acupuncture, and learn Windows 10, just to name a few.

Cabin Review

Standard Interior Stateroom

Cabin was larger than expected with ample closet space. At no point did we feel cramped. We did not expect to spend a lot of time in our room so we chose to spend the money on our vacation that would have been spent on a larger suite. It would have been nice to have a window just for the natural daylight - without an alarm it would be easy to sleep in as it was dark. Otherwise the room was great.

Port Reviews

Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

Fort Lauderdale is not closely accessible from the Port. You would need to have transportation to go into the city and explore. It is a very industrial area with numerous cruise ship terminals and cargo ship ports. On our turnaround day (when some people disembarked but we stayed on) we chose to stay on the ship then get off and explore. This was do to the accessibility aspect, as well as the fact we didn't want to have to get back on the boat by wading through the thousands of people who were embarking. From the top deck looking out, you get some pretty spectacular views of the area. It is a nice port to look at from up top, but not one I would get out and explore as an excursion destination.

Half Moon Cay

The picture perfect beach when it comes to Caribbean sand and sea. Because Holland America owns the island, there is a very tiny population so you have the island basically all to yourself. The water is spectacular blue and the sand is so white and fine. We visited twice on our 2 week cruise and it was definitely one of our favourites.

Grand Cayman (Georgetown)

There were 4 other cruise ships, 5 including ours, in Port that day. It made for a very hectic and crowded downtown Grand Cayman. We chose to stay close by and explore and shop. Prices were about equivalent to those at home for clothing and gifts so we didn't spend too much. From the downtown area, there are no beaches accessible for lounging that we came across. We only spent a couple hours checking out shops and wading through people before we decided we'd had enough. Next time, we would definitely grab a cab and check out 7 mile beach that we heard so much about.

Key West

Loved the city! We walked and shopped and explored in Key West. Wear comfortable shoes!! You can certainly cover some distance in this city. Had the famous chocolate dipped key lime pie on a stick. It was a little tart and a little bitter, but good. I probably would have preferred just a regular ole slice of pie. Prices were more reasonable here for gifts and clothes than in previous ports. At this particular port, we docked at the Navy base and was provided a shuttle into town. The drivers of the shuttle were amazing and provided historical information on the way. No need to purchase the tour in our minds!

San Juan

Such a beautiful city. You see it as soon as you sail in. We opted to see Old San Juan on foot on our own. We wandered city streets and checked out a variety of shops over a number of hours. There is tons to see and do here. One of our favourite stops this trip!
