We are baby boomers -- I had cruised on various cruise lines but he had never cruised before. We flew into San Juan the day before and stayed at Chateau Cervantes, in Old Town, just one block from the pier -- walked to the ship the next afternoon. Chateau Cervantes is a gem -- all suite hotel of 6 floors, gleaming tile, very clean! Good continental breakfast. The front desk was very helpful in guiding us around the city and places to eat. The ship was comfortable, our steward was efficient, and embarkation was effortless except for the 30 minute wait in line. Next time I'll pay to pre-board. The cruise director did a good job of entertaining us and keeping us informed about upcoming schedules. We had two complaints on this cruise -- the food was decent but monotonous. The steakhouse was very good, however, and the burger bar was a good fill-in. Breakfasts were the same every day. Second, the cabin walls are very thin -- we could hear the partying, and fighting, of our next-door neighbors every night until the wee hours. This should have been policed. Also, you can't order a hot breakfast in room service, only a continental one. The ports were really fun, and getting off the ship each day was easy. Even debarkation went smoothly. My husband would love to cruise again.
Traveled with others and a van driver -- saw the volcano but much of the was was steep winding roads. Would not do again.
Walked around the town, shopped for jewelry.
Hired a cab driver who took us to Grand Case on the north side of the island and dropped us off. Spent time on the beautiful beach. Had trouble getting a cab back to the ship.
Stayed in Old Town, rode the trolley around the area, ate lots of excellent seafood. Chateau Cervantes is a gem -- we were upgraded to the penthouse suite which was awesome!!
Used a cab to tour the interior of the island.
