Food and entertainment were disappointing compared to NCL Epic and Getaway.

Sail Date: Oct 2015

We cruised on the NCL Gem October 20, 2015 to October 30, 2015

We had previously cruised on the NCL Epic and NCL Getaway within the last 18 months and were looking forward to the same quality albeit in a small ship. Unfortunately we were mostly disappointed.

We chose our usual inside cabin which was a little smaller, but certainly very clean and comfortable. TV was a little smaller also and had poor channel selection - which seems irrelevant, but not when you are feeling a little seasick due to rough Atlantic Ocean on the last day sea day before returning to NYC.

Port Reviews

Tortola

The port is currently under construction and they are planning to have quite a few shops portside by the new year and it should be very nice. Right now there are only about 5 - handicrafts mainly. We didnt go further because it begain pouring rain and it was apparently quite a long walk to get taxis or excursions. the island looked beautiful and would have been nice to see - maybe next time.

St. Maarten

we had previously toured the island, so this time just wandered around the shops portside. Very nice and good variety. Found decent quality T-shirts for only $5 each. Also were a few little places to eat and/or drink, but we didnt try any.

St. Thomas

Diamonds, diamonds, diamonds. Wandered around downtown - from ship it cost $4 pp each way by taxi. Mostly jewellery stores. Some will offer free gift to just go into their stores. Fierce competition. Never pay first price. Good prices on liquor at Caribana store. Something to keep in mind, most stores downtown also have a store at the portside shopping centre.
