We sailed on Splendour of the Seas and I must say I was really pleasantly surprised. We had read some pretty "not so great" reviews here on Cruise Critic and were quite concerned we had made a mistake. As it turned out, we did not. The cruise was everything we hoped it would be and more. This was our first every cruise and my wife was not very optimistic, but by the second day she was saying , "when we make our next cruise, we need to do this and this". Trust me for my wife, that's a great sign she was happy.

Embarkation was very smooth. We stayed in Venice Mestre the night before and took Bus #2 from in front of our hotel to the Pizzale Roma. Total cost was 3 Euro for the two of us. Then we took the people mover to the port. Much cheaper than a taxi-but beware the bus gets crowded. Once at the port, we were in and out very quickly and on our way up to the ship. RCI did the process very well. We came early and ate lunch on the ship while the rooms were being made ready. The bags showed up soon after we came into the room. Good so far. We took time to explore the ship, have a drink and wait for the sailaway. Venice is a neat port to leave from because of what you see as the ship transits to the open sea.

I used to be in the Navy so I was fascinated watching the ship get underway. This was the first time I had been on a ship at sea in almost 20 years. The excitement comes back quick.

8042 is on the port side and as it turned out, a great location. While it is underneath deck 9, the pool deck, its located underneath where the ping pong tables were-so there was very little noise except during the day, and we were usually out of the room. Plus we could dart up stairs in the morning and get coffee and sit out on the balcony and watch the world go by. Highly recommend this stateroom. The balcony was great to have. The room was big enough for the two of us. Only complaint was the bathroom sink-the nozzle is either not high enough or centered. Made washing hands not as easy at it should have been. Otherwise though the cabin is fine.

Port Reviews

Venice

Venice is Venice. Its outstanding to see-but be prepared for a lot of walking. Hotels are overpriced. Stay in Mestre or even Padova and take the train into town. Its easy and will save you money.

Dubrovnik

The walk around the walls is awesome. So too is the cable car up to the top of the mountain to look down on the city. We took the public bus from the port-it worked just fine. By your tickets at the kiosk out side the cruise port gate and get on the bus. The locals were very helpful.

Santorini

Oia is great, if you are there without all the rest of the tourists. With 7500 people in port and only an hour or so, not so much. I could have spent much more time there prowling the streets
