Aukai: Hawaiian Language/Olelo Hawaii: to swim or travel by means of the sea. This was our first cruise. We thoroughly enjoyed The Pride of America; so much so that we did not leave the ship. Having lived on Maui for over 22 years, we have traveled to all of the Hawaiian Islands, multiple times, for both business and pleasure.

Therefore, we enjoyed our "aukai" experience, traveling by means of the sea, to it's fullest extent by being on the water as much as possible.

I gave Embarkation an average rating; while we are thankful that we could board at our home port of Kahului, we had to walk down an extremely long and narrow fenced in path after being dropped off by friends behind the Old Kahului Railroad Station. As I had ALL my luggage at that point, it was a difficult and uncomfortable transfer. Once on board, however, the magic began.

Balcony

Cabin BC

We began our journey on deck 4 with a window. The room was adequate and being able to see the water is important to us. However, upon embarkation, I asked about paying for an upgrade if one were available. After 48 hours, we were given the option to pay for an upgrade to an 8th deck cabin with a balcony/lanai. We were very pleased that were made the upgrade. The cabin was larger and the deck was fabulous; we spent many hours reading, viewing the stars and watching the sea birds.

Port Reviews

Hilo

The view from the ship, of Hilo Bay and both Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa was beautiful.

Kona (Kailua Bay)

Kona is on the leeward, hot and dry side of Hawaii Island. We rode the tender from ship to shore and back. It was a fun excursion and the only opportunity to do so.

Kauai

I had never before witnessed the Na Pali Coast. It is truly magnificent. We were on the Promenade Deck for the Cultural Ambassador's description of the coastline and life on Kauai.
