Pre Cruise San Juan - Our cruise was from 20-27 September 2015. We flew in to Puerto Rico the day before and stayed at the La Concha Renaissance San Juan Resort. I was impressed with this resort. It was large, very clean and had plenty to do. Sunday morning we checked out around 11:30 and took a taxi to the port. We arrived around 12:00 to find huge lines. We had a suite which entitled us to FTTF privileges. We went to the captains club or whatever the room is that suite members use to check in. It was packed and there was barely standing room. After we checked in we went back out to the main area and found a section of the floor to sit down in as all seats and most decent standing room was taken.

After sitting there for about 45 minutes we decided to venture back out of the port and find something to eat. We walked out of the port and turned left. There was a small sports type bar that we ate at and it was very good. Around 2:00 we ventured back to the port to find the ship was finally boarding but the lines were very long. We hoped in line and spent the next 30-45 minutes winding our way round the inside of the terminal. Finally we got on the boat around 2:30 I believe. This was probably my worst embarkation experience with Carnival. After boarding the ship we went straight to our room and found our luggage already outside of the cabin. We took it in and unpacked. We stayed on the boat until the muster drill which was typical. We found our station and stood in line for about 45 minutes to an hour. Thankfully the sun was down and it was not terribly hot but Carnival’s muster drills are a cluster. They ask that you be there at a certain time but people continue to filter in for 45 minutes to an hour after the designated time while everyone who arrived ON TIME has to stand and wait. The drill began and we couldn’t hear much of what was being said because we were standing by a large vent. This is my 5th cruise so I knew the drill already. After we were dismissed we roamed around the ship.

Day 1 St. Thomas – We took the water taxi over to St. John’s and my wife did a mermaid photo shoot. She very much anticipated this excursion and I learned that everyone woman wants to be a mermaid. The lady brought this mermaid tail made of fabric and foam and took many pictures. I must say that although I was skeptical before the shoot, it was pretty neat and the pictures of my wife turned out great. Of course the photographer had a great model to work with. After the shoot we went back to the location where the water taxi leaves St. John and we ate at a local restaurant. We then made our way back to the boat.
