My wife and I sailed on the Viking Idi for the Rhine Getaway cruise out of Amsterdam and ending in Basil, Switzerland September 12-19, 2015. We spent four days in Amsterdam and had a great time visiting the museums, cruising the canals, enjoying the cuisine, and just walking taking in the scenery. On the day of departure our taxi driver could not find the exact location in which the Idi had docked and we had to walk a few hundred yards with our luggage until we found her. In this respect Viking could have done a better job in providing signage directing passengers to their respective ships. However, this was only a small blip on our otherwise amazing trip down the Rhine. The staff were amazing and went out of their way to assist you at any time. Nick, our program director was out of this world. He gave each evening's orientation for the next day that was not only informative but hilarious. He was our guide to the dinner in Rudescheim and actually sang a few songs with the band.

Our room had a veranda with two chairs and a small table. The room is typically small but extremely well designed. We had enough space to store our belongings and the suitcases went under the bed. Our room steward did an excellent job .

The food and dining room service overall was very good. We ate in both the dining room and the Aquavit Terrace. Enjoyed the wine and beer that came with lunch and supper. We opted for the beverage package (150 euros pp) that included the standard liquors and a wider wine selection. Personal drinking habits will determine if it is right for you but we thought the cost was reasonable compared to the costs on ocean cruises. The only entertainment during the cocktail hour was a piano player that in my opinion was just so-so. After dinner entertainment included a trivia contest, name that tune contest, a glassblowing demonstration, and a female singer that performed one night.

Booked a private 2-hour canal cruise through our hotel's concierge. Expensive, but a very romatice experience.

Walked the historic downtown and Jordan areas on our own using Rick Steves' travel guide for Amsterdam.

Amsterdam

Booked our tickets online and arrived at 9 a.m. Best time to go to avoid the crowds. Recommend seeing Rembrandt's Night Watch first.
