Previously, I have traveled on Holland America, Cunard, and Viking River cruises. We liked this itinerary so we decided to try Norwegian. First, the things I liked: free style dining, the amenities and spaciousness of the cabin, the service provided by all staff. Though the Norwegian website allowed us to book an excursion in Russia that we did not have time to make, the shore excursion person was very helpful in providing an equally positive experience. I think the design of the central atrium is really lovely, though in general it is difficult to figure out how to get certain places!
Problems: I was appalled by the Market Cafe buffet. The food in most of the restaurants, including specialty restaurants was not hot enough. I was shocked that in the first three days of the cruise the food was not served by staff. The clientele on the ship was worse than usual in their frenzy to get to the food (which Norwegian can't help) but why people were allowed to put their water bottles under spigots or to touch food is beyond me. DO NOT travel with this line unless you have a dining package and can avoid that horrible place. The buffet is terrible quality- only a step above cafeteria food. We found the specialty restaurants quite pleasant, though again, the quality is not the same as HAL.
Though the destination ports are really wonderful, I would highly recommend that you not travel via Norwegian without specifically thinking about your family's likes and dislikes.
Our cabin was quite spacious and had plenty of room for everything. It was well attended to by our cabin steward who was unfailingly friendly and accommodating.
This is a beautiful medieval city that is easily within walking distance of the ship. We loved exploring its churches and walking Pikk street with its beautiful architecture.
