My wife and I have taken two European land tours, three ocean cruises and one Viking river cruise prior to our most recent cruise, and we have come to the conclusion that river cruising allows us to experience the best of both worlds. Although our Cities of Light (Prague to Paris) cruise on the Longship Idun failed to live up to the standard set by Viking on our first Viking cruise (the Romantic Danube on the Viking Longship Kara in October 2014), it didn't miss it by much. Since our Cities of Light (Prague to Paris) cruise was the first of the season, the problem with the tour of the American Military Cemetery and the city of Luxembourg after disembarkation, although not foreseeable or unheard of, the problem was not a total disaster. We were all left to "tour" the cemetery and Luxembourg on our own after the tour guides failed to show up. While he was apologetic, the program director's response to the tour guides absence was less than one would have hoped for. The situation was taken up with Viking customer service after our return and was resolved to the satisfaction of all concerned.

Except for the "missing" tour guides, the rest of the Cities of Light (Prague to Paris) cruise lived up to the standard that Viking had previously established for itself. Although not in the old section, the hotel in Prague, the Prague Hilton, was a beautiful, upscale, well appointed hotel located on the bank overlooking the Danube. The Hotel Pullman Paris Eiffel Tower was a similar type of hotel a stones throw from the Eiffel Tower itself.

Like the Kara, the Viking Longship Idun is a relatively new ship. Its modern, clean and beautifully designed with the maximum utilization of light and space as its goal. A goal that Viking has been successful in meeting. The veranda (A & B) cabins are 205 sq. ft. with hotel style accommodations (including robes & slippers upon request.) If anything is lacking it would be an almost non-existent "gift shop" and a gym. However, there are shops galore in every town and almost on every excursion and if it's exercise you want there is a track on the Sun deck of the Longships you can use and generally somewhere between 45 to 90 minutes worth of walking during the shore excursions. The level of exercise has been sufficient that neither my wife nor I have suffered any weight gain on either of our 2 cruises. That fact is amazing considering the quality of food and the dinning experience that takes place. We have found the food to be exceptional from the cooked to order breakfast to the lunch and dinner multi-selection menus (with beer, wine and beverages included.) There were after dinner activities and entertainment each evening of different types to appeal to many varied interests.
