First HAL Cruise

Review for Canada & New England Cruise on Veendam

I have been interested in taking a Holland America cruise since I saw them in Alaska 11 years ago. This is our first time going to Nova Scotia. The Veendam crew and staff were all friendly and for the most part helpful. The ship is old but was kept very clean. There was a small outbreak of norovirus it was handled very professionally.

We were lucky, we had almost perfect weather in every port of call. In St. John's (New Brunswick) we got to see the reversing falls in both directions. Very cool!

In Halifax we went to Peggy's Cove, beautiful scenery. The shops there are a little hokey, but mostly filled with original items.

Cabin Review

Verandah Suite

Cabin B

Our Vista Suite (Balcony cabin) was aft on the ship. We enjoyed sitting there every morning with coffee from room service (very good). We had an issue with the air conditioning unit it was not blowing air cold enough for 90 degree days. It took the staff two days to "rectify" the situation. or maybe it was because in Canada the outside temperature wasn't as hot. Overall a pleasant experience.

Port Reviews

Portland (Maine)

We have been to Portland many times. It is an interesting Harbor and the "old port" has nice restaurants and shops.

Sydney (Nova Scotia)

We rented a car and did our own tour. Went to Beddeck for seafood lunch than took the scenic lake road back to the ship. Very nice
