This was our first trip on Viking and it exceeded my expectations. We did the cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest and I'd recommend taking the trip in that direction as it builds up from charming small cities in Germany and Austria to the "Imperial" capitals of Vienna and Budapest.

The ship was comfortable and lovely, in a minimalist way. No casino, no theater, no shops or auxiliary restaurants like you find on large ocean cruises. Instead, it was cozy, relaxed, intimate. With just 180 passengers, we got to recognize those on our trip and enjoy their company. The atmosphere overall was relaxed and casual. Unpretentious. Dining together was a great chance to get to meet interesting people. The excursions were small groups. Guides for the included excursions were excellent. The headsets provided made it possible to always hear what the guide was saying even as you had the freedom to wander from the group and look at whatever caught your eye. On board entertainment was not extensive but added to the cultural experiences.

A highlight was Viking's Opera Night in Vienna. Not the state opera house, but very enjoyable and accessible. Viking has its own theater, orchestra and opera company presenting The Marriage of Figaro. Cast members travel with you by bus from the dock to the theater, explaining the opera's storyline and answering questions about life in Vienna and their art. That introduction combined with the subtitles made it easy to enjoy the opera performance. Bravo to Viking for creating such a memorable experience!
