This was my first cruise. I traveled with my two young-adult daughters. I most enjoyed the lovely views from the ship, especially sailing in and out of Villefranche, Venice and Kotor. My idea of entertainment was spending the evenings watching the sky, the sea, and the sunsets rather than the concurrently occurring theatre shows. This was quite the opposite of how most of my fellow cruise mates decided to spend their time, which worked out nicely as it left many of the decks wonderfully solitary.

I may have been naive as to how this all works but I was most turned off by the fact that at every opportunity Royal Caribbean tried to get money from us as if we were sponges from which they squeezed money - from Wifi to wine and everything in between.

What was most troubling was the fact that, as independent travelers, we received no appreciable assistance from Guest Services about making arrangements to get to places from the port (and the ports of Livorno, Civitavecchia, Salerno and Ravenna were all distances from the main attractions: Florence, Rome, Pompeii, Sorrento and Capri, Ravenna and Bologna, respectively). RC was only intent on selling their terribly overpriced excursions. The worst of it was holding us hostage when we arrived in Ravenna because they claimed we could only get to the town (a 15-minute drive) with their $22 per person RT shuttle. Leaving the ship after the earlier mass exodus of people, we found an information booth inside the port where a very helpful person called us a taxi which we shared with a couple for 25 Euros (5 E each).
