I decided to take my family on a premium vacation before my son headed off to college. I had been on a cruise about 20 years ago and thought it was terrific so I decided to book Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas. I heard RC would be an upgrade from my one other experience which was on the Carnival Sensation, a ship less than half the size.
While we had a good time our family of four (wife, son's ages 18 & 7 and me) agreed that we wouldn't cruise again or if we did we wouldn't choose a similar ship. While the size and amenities were impressive and the service was great, we found that it was just WAY too crowded.
To be fair I'll list the positives and the negatives:
I would have preferred a balcony room but booked too late to get one. Our room had a king size bed and two bunk beds which drop down from the ceiling. It really is a cool set up. We recognized the room would be small as cruise ship rooms are so no complaints. Everything worked well.
This turned out to be a fantastic port. We stayed in the Courtyard on Glichner (sp?) in Elizabeth, NJ and hit the terrific outlet mall the day before our trip. We had a decent view of the Statue of Liberty from our ship. After the cruise we spent a couple days in Midtown Manhattan. That turned out to be the highlight of the trip. Flights out of Newark were on time and the process was painless.
