Our family of six ranging in age from 75 to 9 recently completed a voyage to Alaska on the Norwegian Jewel. I didn’t expect too much so I was not disappointed. Cruising with a family you enjoy being with is fun and in this hectic age it is rare to have such expansive time blocks together. The three kids loved the ship and our excursions. The two “virgin cruisers” were told not to expect any luxury and they were prepared for long lines, endless hawking of products and pennyante fees. They enjoyed themselves. The staterooms were small but acceptable, clean and comfortable. No electric plugs available but one, so bring a power strip if you are like most, needing to charge cameras, phones, ipods, curling irons, hairdryers, etc. Best thing I can liken this ship to is a floating Motel Six.

The excursion programs are very costly and not included. While you can book independently from those on the ship and these can be cheaper, the best advice I can pass along is study all your options and be careful about time slots so you don’t wind up missing the ship when it leaves port. Also, be prepared for rain. I have bicycled down the Yukon pass in pouring rain and paid $150 for the privilege. We had our seaplane excursion cancelled due to weather, and it was too late to book something else. So we had nothing to do but walk around Ketchikan.

I have some pros and cons for you if you are considering this line:

Family Balcony

tight but storage spaces for things help the flow. Nice beds
