This was my sixth Azamara cruise (four on the Journey plus two on the Quest), but it had been four years since the last. We were six in all, including two who had never cruised before.
I fell in love with this line from the get-go. Of course I had read some reviews saying the brand had been slightly diluted of late, and was, if not apprehensive, just plain curious.
We felt welcomed and happy the moment we checked in. Heike recognized us, as did our cabin steward Alexis.
The most unique city on Earth, so arrive a few days early if possible. Get lost and you will be away from the crowds in an instant.
Do not miss the city walls walk. Some steep climbing but the views are gobsmacking. Take the funicular to the top of the mountain for fantastic views of the old city as well as the myriad islands in the area. And finally - take a ferry to Lokrum, a national part a short distance from the south entrance to the city.
Get away from Fira sooner than later by taking a bus to Oia (Ia). But Oia is also crowded as everyone goes there for sunset. I would recommend walking from Fira to Firostefani and Imerovigli: stunning views from there as well, and far fewer tourists.
We spent most of the day in Delos. The tender from the Azamara Journey arrived 5 minutes before the ferry departure to Delos, at the same dock! A half hour each way and it was well worth it. It's not Ephesus but fascinating nevertheless.
I have been to Ephesus three times, and it is just amazing. This time we got to see the Roman Villas, which were under restoration the last time there. Tremendous! Also worth the effort in Kusadasi: Priene, Miletus and Didyma. Miletus is gorgeous, and you will be practically the ONLY tourists there!
One of the most exciting ports in the world. Not to be missed. Have been there 5 times and would go back in a jiffy.
