Embarkation

This was the smoothest embarkation I've ever experienced. Carnival assigned us a check-in time window and told us to arrive at the port during that time. This significantly cut down on the long lines to get thru security and to get the key cards. I don't know if this is a fleet-wide change or something unique to the Conquest or Fort Lauderdale. Also, the Fort Lauderdale cruise terminal has been given a makeover. Gone is the old building with nasty carpet and the barely functioning air conditioning.

Porthole

Cabin PT

Good cabin for a great price. The porthole windows are a nice compromise between an inside and oceanview. The cabin was very quiet except for the noise of the bow thrusters when pulling into port. We noticed a few wear and tear problems like missing metallic decorations on the lamps that had apparently fallen off and a few chips in the shower, nothing major tho. For whatever reason the water from the sink and shower are unusually warm even on their coldest settings. I'm not sure if this issue is unique to this one room or just the way the plumbing is.

Port Reviews

St. Maarten

Great Bay beach is within walking distance of the ship and has many chairs and umbrellas for rent. The walk is not difficult but is farther than it looks. It's about 1.5 miles each way. At the beach, expect to be asked multiple times about massages and hair braiding by the locals. The water is extremely calm here. There was a bit of seaweed I the water, but I've heard that's seasonal.

San Juan

The ship docks right in old town close to many of the historical sites and shops. There is also a free trolley that no one tells you about that goes around through the old part of the city. We didn't discover this until we'd already walked a good distance...

However, the city is easily walkable for those in good shape. The castle del morro is a must see. It is part of the national park system and requires a small entry fee which also gets you into another nearby castle/fortress. The trolley stops at both locations.
